November 15, 2008-- The weekend brought the pinnacle of the Fall Season to SMC as the gaels team hosted the 4th Annual Saint Mary’s Lacrosse Invitational Tournament. Six WCLL teams: Saint Mary’s, Cal, Santa Clara, UC Santa Cruz, UC Merced, and Nevada, participated.
SMC vs. UC Santa Cruz
The Gaels started the day against their new divisional rival, the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs. The two teams didn’t waste time as they traded the first two goals for an early 1-1 tie. After that, it was all Santa Cruz in the first half. The halftime score was 5-1. A defensive dead-lock on both sides of the field in the second half saw only one more goal being scored as Saint Mary’s dropped its tournament opener 5-2.
SMC vs. Merced
Saint Mary’s then faced the newest WCLL team, UC Merced. Coming out flat from the grueling loss to Santa Cruz, the Gaels gave up two quick goals. They were quickly avenged as the Gaels went on a scoring run that lasted almost the entire game. The final tally saw Saint Mary’s over the young Merced team 11-3.
SMC vs. Cal
In the final game of the day, the Gaels faced the Cal Bears in a tremendously hard fought game. Both teams, tired from the full day, battled it out in the first half as it ended with Cal clinging to a two-point lead. In the end, Cal’s numbers were too much for Saint Mary’s and the Gaels fell 8-3. The tournament went off without a hitch and Saint Mary’s would like to thank the fans, referees, and all the other teams for a great day of lacrosse. The team to beat seemed to be Cal as they posted a 3-0 record including impressive wins over Santa Clara and Saint Mary’s.
