March 13, 2010- The St. Mary's Rugby team traveled to Sacramento to face Sacramento State in a Northern California League Rugby match. The Gaels took first blood as we scored first, with a try by Jimmy Wallace and a Jamie Borup conversion. Hornets quickly responded and it was 7-7.But Sac State would not die
without a fight. Kyle Batten scored for the Gaels, Borup converted again and it was 14-7. A Tim Maupin score made it 19, and Sac State got a penalty kick to make the score 19 -10 at the half.
The Gaels took advantage of holes in the Hornets defense and had some nice open field play but Sac State kept it a close game until the end of the half. Borup broke loose again, scored and converted to make it 26-10.
The Gaels went on to win 38-15. The Gaels now prepare for a first place show down with UC Berkeley. The winner of this match will get an automatic bid to the sweet sixteen pool in Atlanta, GA. The loser, however, will host the Pacific Coast Playoff Championships on Easter weekend. The Gaels will face the Cal Bears at 1pm on Witter Rugby Field in Berkeley.
