January 9, 2010- ARN, Saint Mary’s hosted Cal Poly in Moraga, CA, and the Gaels remained unbeaten on their preseason with a 39-17 victory over a spirited Cal Poly. SMC was in front 17-5 at the half and unveiled a new playmaker in Mike Haley, who scored three tries. "They took our breath away in the first 10 minutes with their size and athleticism," Saint Mary’s head coach Tim O'Brien told ARN. "We calmed down and competed well." CPSLO was without the services of a couple of their key starters, but nonetheless put up a courageous effort against a program that has risen to the heights of the elite in American collegiate rugby in recent years. Saint Mary’s had concerns of their own going into the match with seven new faces because of serious injuries to some of their starters, but the backups pulled through and got it done, particularly in the closing stages when the Mustangs were knocking on the door but couldn’t crack a resolute SMC defense.“I was pleased with our effort and it was a very good learning experience,” Cal Poly head coach Nick Massman told ARN.
