December 12, 2008-- Saint Mary’s overwhelmed #13 Cal Poly 40-10 in a much anticipated matchup in San Luis Obispo, CA.

American Rugby News was on the ground to report on the big game. ARN--The SMC set piece and lineouts were strong and the rucking was solid, although they were a bit slow to use what was usually quick ball.

Saint Mary's flyhalf Chad Clark (pictured here) had a big game and scored a hat-trick of tries. Prop Matt Crawford was another player who got on the board for SMC.

"I was happy that the team started to play with structure and shape, but it takes a long time to get that right and this is just the infant stages of it," said Saint Mary's coach Johnny Everett. "I was also happy that we kept them scoreless in the second half, but we need to work more on our tackling technique, and there are still a lot of aspects of our play that need to be developed."

Defensively, the Gaels lost their shape a few times as they tended to fly up out of alignment while attempting to make plays.

”Although the performance was strong today, there is still a lot of work to be done in terms of consistency and execution accuracy,” Saint Mary’s guest coach Eddie O’Sullivan told ARN.“There is a good base to build from, but there is still a lot of work to be done if they want to achieve their goals.”

The result saw Saint Mary’s improve its overall record to 6-0-1, while Cal Poly took its first loss of the 2008/09 season to fall to 3-1.
