3/29/11-The Gaels (7-3, 3-0) will square off against U.C. Santa Cruz (2-7, 1-0) this weekend in a match-up that could likely set-up the Gaels for their first regular season conference title in school history. The match is set to take place at 1:00 p.m. in Santa Cruz. Saint Mary’s will look to avenge their only conference loss last season, a loss at home to the Banana Slugs by a count of 10-9. That lone loss gave U.C. Santa Cruz the regular season conference title, but the slugs were unable to fend off the Gaels in the playoffs as Saint Mary’s was able to convincingly pull off a 9-5 victory giving the Gaels their first WCLL conference title in school history.
Although U.C. Santa Cruz struggled through the first part of the season, losing their first 6 games, they have won 2 of their last 3, including a valiant effort in a loss against 10th ranked Cal State Fullerton 13-11. The Gaels shook off their loss to Fullerton with a dominating win over Humboldt State last weekend by a score of 15-5, as they prepare to enter the last five games of the regular season on a high note.
The Gaels and Slugs have a storied past playing a total of 6 times in recent years and going 2-4 against the Slugs. The Gaels enter the conference outscoring opponents by a count of 2/1 scoring 122 goals on the season (12.2 GPG) while surrendering only 64 goals all year (6.4 GPG). The Slugs have given up 100 goals in 9 games played (11 GPG) while only scoring a total of 72 (8 GPG). With a win, the Gaels would move to 4-0 in conference and move within a game of at least a share of the regular season title.
