1/22/2011- Saint Mary's defeated Sacramento State 49-29 Saturday in a friendly match, a result that certianly will make the Gaels stop and take stock.

"I left the field more concerned with what I'd call recklessness, carelessness and a lack of game respect by St Marys than [anything else]," said Saint Mary's Head Coach Tim O'Brien. "You can't have 42 giveaways [penalties and turnovers] and think you'll amount to much against most teams."

In a penalty-riddled match, Saint Mary's accounted for 20 blows of the whistle, but it was the 22 turnovers that caused the Gaels many issues. Sacramento State scored three tries directly off St. Mary's giveaways.

Still, the Gaels got some good defense, especially from the back row of Joe Brohpy, Lloyd Evans and Rob Carlson.

Prop Nick Wallace scored two tries for Saint Mary's as did Mike Haley and freshamn Kinsgley McGowan.

"We played sound defense," said O'Brien. "With that said Sac has size, strength, athleticism and a bit of firepower. They are dynamite attacking inside their 22. Mason has some very raw athletes joining the program and if a few can make a quick transition into rugby they could play deep into the spring."

Saint Mary's entered the weekend with 17 players out due to injury. Of that group captain Andrew Cook, along with centers Bubba Jones and Steve Cassinelli and fullback Max Heath are expected to be back next week.
