"Only A Game," NPR's syndicated sports magazine show interviewed Tom Meschery '61, former NBA Allstar, coach and acclaimed poet and educator about his career and why he is a little bit nervous about delivering the keynote address at Saint Mary's 2012 undergraduate commencement ceremony.
In the entertaining interview "Tom Meschery: NBA Pioneer Turned Poet" with veteran national public radio commentator Bill Littlefield, the SMC alumnus, and Bay Area sports legend talks about growing up in Harbin, China. He playfully argues he was the first basketball player born in China to play in the NBA, and claims Russia too because of his Russian heritage. He also discusses and reads some of his poetry, life after professional sports and finding his second calling as a high school teacher.
Meschery recently published his third book of poetry, "Some Men." His first, "Over the Rim," came out a year before he retired from the NBA. The show "Only A Game" is produced by Boston's NPR station WBUR and can be heard on more than 200 public radion stations across the nation.
