Major Requirements
The study of Politics at Saint Mary's requires proficiency in four major subfields: American Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, and Political Theory. The major course of study includes four lower division courses and nine upper division courses as folllows:
Lower Division
Politics 1, 2, 3, 4
Upper Division
One course in each of the following four groups. In addition, students must take five (5) upper-division Politics courses of their choosing.

The Politics Department faculty recommends that students take:
- Politics 1 (Intro to Comparative Politics) before taking a Group IV upper division course
- Politics 2 (Intro to American Politics) before taking a Group I upper division course
- Politics 3 (Intro to Political Theory) before taking a Group II upper division course
- Politics 4 (Intro to World Politics) before taking a Group III upper division course.
