Ron Ahnen, an assistant professor of politics at Saint Mary's College, was quoted in a front-page article in the Sacramento Bee about a clemency hearing being held by the governor in the case of death row inmate Stanley "Tookie" Williams.
Ahnen's 7-year-old sister was murdered in 1973 in Racine, Wis. The article said that Ahnen, now a member of Washington, D.C.-based Murder Victims Families for Reconciliation, has spoken publicly on behalf of Williams and wants Schwarzenegger to spare his life.
"Granting clemency does not mean that we're holding up Tookie Williams as a model citizen," Ahnen is quoted as saying. "Granting clemency out of mercy is appropriate and just."
