sindtSaint Mary's College announces the appointment of Christopher Sindt as Dean of the Kalmanovitz School of Education. Sindt is entering the role after serving as the interim dean of the Kalmanovitz School of Education during the 2013-14 academic year and the Vice Provost for Graduate and Professional Studies since 2011.

“Dr. Sindt's proven track record as the Vice Provost for Graduate and Professional Studies at Saint Mary’s, his leadership preparation as an American Council on Education Fellow, and his prior experience with K12 education help make him well suited for the position of Dean at this point in KSOE's history and development,” Provost Bethami Dobkin said.

Sindt has served also as associate dean for the School of Liberal Arts and director of the Master of Fine Arts Program in Creative Writing. In 2011-12, he was an American Council on Education Fellow. The ACE Fellows program is a selective leadership development program for university administrators. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Squaw Valley Community of Writers, and he served from 2002-09 on the advisory board of WritersCorps, a national organization that places writers in urban classrooms and communities.

As a professor of English, Sindt’s academic fields of interest include the literature of the natural world, the literature of California and creative writing. His poetry has been published widely, and he is the author of two collections of poetry: The Land of Give and Take, and most recently, The Bodies. He has received the James D. Phelan Award, residencies at the Blue Mountain Center, the Macdowell Colony and Mesa Refuge, and the Reginald S. Tickner Fellowship, which included serving as the writer-in-residence at the Gilman School, a high school in Baltimore, Md.

“I am honored to be given this responsibility to serve the Kalmanovitz School of Education, and I am delighted to work with the exceptional faculty and staff of the school. It is an excellent school providing a high quality educational experience to a diverse population of educators, counselors and school and community leaders. Together this year we have refined several areas of strength and emphasis, each stemming from the College’s mission: action and community-based research, environmental literacy, Lasallian education, and urban education, ” Sindt said.

Sindt’s appointment will begin July 1, 2014, and, in addition to his role as dean, he will continue as the Vice Provost for Graduate and Professional Studies.
