The PEN American Center has announced that Saint Mary's alumnus and former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Hass is the winner of the 2013 Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for his collection of essays "What Light Can Do." The Center's annual PEN Literary Awards are the most comprehensive literary awards program in the country.
The honor, which comes with a $10,000 prize, is the PEN American Center's prestigious Art of the Essay award and it recognizes Hass' 2012 book of essays as a work that exemplifies the dignity and esteem that the essay form imparts to literature.
For more than 50 years, the PEN Literary Awards have honored many of the most outstanding voices in literature across such diverse fields as fiction, poetry, science writing, essays, sports writing, biography, children’s literature, translation, and drama.
