IT Services will purchase and install software for you and your students to use during class. If you have a budget that can be used to purchase the software, the process is relatively simple:
- Identify the software you wish to use and make sure that it is compatible with the computers in your classroom;
- Contact IT Services before the Summer Break and let us know what you would like us to purchase and what G/L code we can charge the cost to;
- Let us know which room you will be teaching in as soon as one has been assigned to you.
If you follow these steps IT Services will install the software before the Fall Semester.
Caveats:
- Textbooks with software: be sure that the manufacturer of the the software allows you to install the software in a lab or on publicly accessible computers.
Explanation: in many cases manufacturers provide software for individual (student) use and prohibit installation of the software on a network, in a lab or on publicly accessible computers. This typically happens when the full version of the software is expensive. Your students may use the included software on their own computers, but the manufacturer requires the institution to purchase the full version.
The vendor of the textbook should be able to explain the limitations. - Software for homework use: be sure that the software will run on both Windows and Macintosh computers.
Explanation: For your students to be able to use the software for homework they must be able to install and run the software on their computers. Some publishing companies include software for one platform and not the other. Others make their software not backward compatible with older versions of the operating systems (for example: the software requires Windows 7 and cannot be used on Windows XP).
The vendor of the textbook should be able to explain the limitations. - Make your request early: be sure to contact us before the Summer Break.
Explanation: During the academic year we have limited opportunities to install software. Typically, IT Services installs classroom software only during the Summer Break. If you are late, IT Services will try to accommodate your request, but we cannot guarantee that the software will be in place by the start of the semester. - Funding: be sure to have a budget before requesting software.
Explanation: IT Services does not have the funds to purchase instructional software. Once your department has funded your software request and the software is installed, IT Services will try to fund the inevitable updates and upgrades. Please let us know when you stop using the software so the College does not pay for updates etc. that are no longer needed.
