Saint Mary’s students from SMC AMA recently visited Edelman’s corporate office in San Francisco, the world’s largest public relations firm. 24 students ranging from Business Administration majors to English minors as well as MBA students and alumni attended. Career Center director, Patty Bishop organized the site visit along with internship and career fair coordinator Paula Conrad and co-presidents of SMC AMA, Danette Winkler and Eric Strand. Students were hosted by Emma Shiflett, recruitment coordinator for Edelman’s Western Region Recruitment. Shiflett provided resume tips that covered branding, cover letter details, and the 5 C’s to making a perfect resume: clean, clear, concise, convincing, and classic. She also offered tips for students interested in public relations and how to best create their resumes. In addition, six speakers gave advice and tips on various departments, which included Rebecca L. Andreassen, account executive, corporate, who spoke about corporate development and Amanda Mizrahi, assistant account executive, who gave insight into the Digital department. Andreassan revealed how to deal with corporate social responsibility while Mizrahi, who is a new intern and has been at Edelman for six months, discussed the importance of media presence and working with clients.
This learning experience was particularly beneficial to students in regards to creating resumes, the importance of attending events such as the site visit, and insight into the world of public relations. Many of the attendees from the trip stated that if they took one thing from the trip it was the importance of revising one’s resume over and over again until perfection is achieved. Attending onsite events also proved to be of great importance as it enables students to put a face to a resume. The trip also contributed to a new passion in PR amongst a few attendees. Danette Winkler’s take away from the visit, “The importance of attending this event was greater than just gaining experience. It was an opportunity to represent Saint Mary’s and show the PR world what a Gael really is. Personally, I found it rewarding knowing that I was enabling future generations of students to visit Edelman for years to come.” The experience was also a huge honor for Saint Mary’s as only three other colleges have received an invitation to Edelman’s corporate office in San Francisco.
