Educational Specialist I
EDUCATION SPECIALIST (PRELIMINARY CREDENTIAL) MILD/MODERATE
Most courses are offered in the late afternoon and evening. Coursework may be reduced for individuals who hold a current California Multiple Subject or Single Subject Teaching Credential. Please meet with the program director or advisor for an appropriate plan of study. Program is front-loaded to meet the 120 hours required by the state for internships. Prerequisite
An undergraduate or graduate course in Human Development taken in the past 5 years.
Required Courses (32 units - 12 months)
SUMMER TERM START
Intensive Program meets the 120 hour pre-service coursework for the intern option, which also requires successful completion of CBEST & CSET:
- SPED 290 - Learning & Development for the Education Specialist, 2 units
- SPED 291 - Introduction to Inclusive Education: Legal, Ethical & Educational Foundations, 2 units
- SPED 292 - Best practices for the Ed Specialist: Introduction to Assessment, Curriculum & Case Management, 3 units
- SPED 282A - Positive Behavior Support I, 2 units
- SPED 293 - Educational & Assistive Technology for Mild/Moderate Disabilities, 1 unit
Fall Term:
- SPED 299 - Assessment & Program Planning, 3 units
- SPED 294 - Teaching & Learning for Mild/Moderate Disabilities I (w/ fieldwork component), 4 units
- SPED 295 - Universal Access for English Learners, 2 units
- SPED 296 - Health Education, 1 unit
January Term (Candidates must register to take the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA) examination as part of SPED 285 course requirements.):
- SPED 285- Advanced Reading Preparation, 2 units
Spring Term:
- SPED 282 B - Positive Behavior Support II, 2 units
- SPED 297 - Consultation, Collaboration & Communication for the Ed Specialist, 2 units
- SPED 298 - Teaching & Learning for Mild/Moderate Disabilities II (w/ fieldwork component), 6 units
