Program Manager, B.A. Program in Leadership and Organizational Studies
Leadership Studies Programs
How long have you been at Saint Mary’s College?
I’ve been at SMC for 23 years. My early years were spent in the former School of Extended Education, working with adult learners in counseling and student services. I am currently the program manager for the B.A. Program in Leadership and Organizational Studies (“BALOS”), a 24-month online/hybrid degree completion program for working adults, which is part of Leadership Studies Programs at SMC.
Tell us a little about your job.
As the program manager, I wear multiple hats for the BALOS program – recruiting, admission, registration, enrollment, advising and confirming degree completion, to name a few. A cohort-based program, students complete a 12-core course program together as a community of learners, engaging and supporting each other along the way. I enjoy working with and supporting adult learners. The BALOS program provides an opportunity for degree completion, which may mean a promotion at work, being a role model for children or achieving a personal goal of completing a degree program.
What do you enjoy the most/find most rewarding about your job?
As with many adult learners, BALOS students have very full plates – demanding jobs, family and community responsibilities. Making the decision to return to school is a significant commitment for the student and their family. I work closely with students throughout the program, focused on making their academic journey a valuable and memorable learning experience that goes beyond just "completing the degree."
It is very gratifying to witness the changes in students as they find their voice, realize their talents and often come to see the world in a new way as a result of their Saint Mary’s College experience. Celebrating with students and their families on Commencement Day is quite special.
What do you enjoy most about the SMC community/campus?
I enjoy being part of a community that continues to promote and practice inclusivity and respect for all.
Our beautiful campus – what more to say?
Anything you would like to share about your interests, hobbies, family or volunteer work?
My stepson is a firefighter in Colorado - I am very proud of the work he does and who he is in the world.
Most people know me as a dog-lover. Guilty as charged!
I also love music and the game of basketball, from my days as a UCLA student watching John Wooden work his magic. And now I say, go Gaels!
