Saint Mary's College Of California

Mission Statement

In the Catholic, Liberal Arts and Lasallian traditions of Saint Mary's College, Residence Life is called to serve, teach, inspire and minister to college students. We endeavor to provide safe and comfortable living environments in which we hope to create and support an involving community, which seeks to empower the whole person to grow as a responsible and respectful individual. We attempt to challenge our students to advance intellectually, to develop spiritually and to serve others while becoming an active member if the diverse college community.

The Office of Residence Life (ORL) seeks to create a purposeful community that affirms the Liberal Arts traditions of the College in which students, staff and faculty may learn together in and out of the classroom. We are a community in which the skills and habits of learning are facilitated, civility of discourse is powerfully affirmed, and freedom of expression is uncompromisingly protected.

The ORL seeks to develop and nurture safe spiritual committees which affirm the Catholic traditions of the College and celebrate the ecumenical reality of Saint Mary's ministering to the spiritual needs of residents. The ORL seeks to encourage a culture of service that affirms the Lasallian traditions of the College in which residents are provided with opportunities to experience the joy of service. We hope to facilitate the development of students' interpersonal skills and encourage them to be generous with time, talent and resources in service to others in their residences, the campus community and the world at large. The ORL encourages students to acknowledge and embrace their own freedoms, campus rights and responsibilities, to respect the dignity of themselves and others to understand, appreciate and celebrate the educational benefits of a diverse college community.
