MORAGA, Calif. (Nov. 16, 2005) - Saint Mary's College students are sponsoring a "Toys and Toiletries Drive" for survivors of the recent hurricanes in Florida and the Gulf Coast from now until Dec. 7 and will deliver the donations in time for Christmas.
The students hope to collect enough donations to fill a 40-foot container, provided by the global transportation company APL Ltd., that will be on campus Dec. 6 and 7. All donations will be personally sorted and sent to relocated hurricane survivors in Houston.
Toys will be collected for both boys and girls ages 3 to 13 years old who have lost their homes. For some children these toys may serve as their only Christmas gifts. Also needed are toiletries for men and women, i.e. toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, mouthwash, razors, disposable razors, sanitary napkins, tampons, shaving cream, deodorant, soap, moisturizer, baby and adult size diapers, baby wipes, shampoo, conditioner and hair gel.
From now until Dec. 7, donations can be placed in boxes located around campus in residence halls, Campus Ministry, the Student Involvement and Leadership office, and at the college's front gate. Donations can also be made when the container is parked on campus on Dec. 6 and 7.
Campus groups organizing the drive include Best Buddies, Intervarsity Christian Fellowship and the Liberal and Civic Studies clubs.
