Students Led By Compassion

Saint Mary's College students who traveled to New Orleans to perform hurricane relief work were featured in a front-page news story in the Contra Costa Times about an emerging generation of "New Philanthropists."

Many young people who express their compassion through community service work were galvanized by the Hurricane Katrina disaster, according to the article. Online journal entries written by the Saint Mary's students from New Orleans expressed "a sense of deep satisfaction" from the physically and emotionally draining work of clearing debris from storm-ravaged houses, the story said. Many of the Saint Mary's students who traveled to New Orleans in January and again for spring break plan to return there for the college's January Term next year.
