Dear Members of the SMC Community,
Throughout the summer, small but important changes continue to take place. I'm particularly pleased to announce the appointment of my new administrative assistant, Mrs. Chandra Commer ([email protected]). Chandra brings substantial office and customer relations experience with her, and I know that she is looking forward to working in our vibrant and engaging educational community.
Although the pace of summer is different than the traditional academic year, work continues. The College Committee on Inclusive Excellence (CCIE) is moving forward, and as you may be aware, is launching a Summer Reading/Dialogue program each Wednesday between July 16 and August 6. This opportunity is open to all faculty, staff, students and administrators, and the book, Privilege, Power, and Difference by Allan G. Johnson will be provided to all participants. I particularly appreciate the leadership that co-facilitators Mary McCall ([email protected]) and Faith Taylor ([email protected]) are providing for this group.
I would also like to congratulate the "graduates" of our pilot program, "Leading in a Diverse & Multicultural Environment," which was conducted by Linda Rose, Barry Chersky and Jerry Lew. The program addressed topics such as communication skills; recruitment, hiring and interviewing; retention; and conflict resolution. Graduates of the program include Tom Carter, Mark Chiarucci, Joan Cubé, Cathy Davalos, Emily Elliott, Mark Figueroa, Angelica Garcia, Robert Kennedy, Scott Kier, Pete Michell, Julia Odom, Chris Sindt, Marty Storti, Frances Sweeney, and Russ Tiberii. Details regarding the program were shared by Linda and Barry at the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity (NCORE) in Florida at the end of May. The program will be offered again to the larger community in the fall. If you have an interest in being either a participant or presenter, please contact Linda ([email protected]) or Barry ([email protected]) for more information.
Finally, Reuben Mitchell will be joining the CCIE at least twice this month, and may be available for individual consultation as a service to our community. To learn about his role at SMC, please see the announcement of services presented on my web page, or contact him directly at [email protected]
Please continue to enjoy the beautiful weather and opportunities for rejuvenation. And, as always, feel free to stop in and see us.
