What: Systems: A Movie Premiere will showcase John Baldessari's (b. 1931 Los Angeles) deadpan visual juxtapositions of image and word that both challenge and illuminate meaning. Kimsooja's (b 1957 Taegu, South Korea) video installations blur the boundaries between aesthetic and transcendent experiences. Allan McCollum (b 1944 Los Angeles) applies mass-reproduction techniques and strategies to hand-made objects to raise questions about the value of a work of art in a consumer society. Julie Mehretu's (b 1970 Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) paintings and drawings reference architecture and mapping to achieve an abstract, calligraphic complexity that resemble dense social networks.
