Systems Intelligence: New Habits of Mind for New Solutions

A workshop by Steve Byers & Christine Rand

$50/$40 Saint Mary's Community (Alumni, Students, Staff, and Faculty)

Workshop Description:

This workshop will enable you to address complex challenges more effectively using systems thinking and inquiry practice. You will be invited to examine and shift your “habits of thinking” in order to gain a deeper understanding of some complex challenge in your life or work.

The experiential learning environment will feature personal reflection, conversation in pairs and small groups, somatic learning, and whole group sharing of emerging wisdom. By participating in this workshop, you will gain “new habits of mind” by asking better questions, applying systems thinking, identifying system structures, mental models, and places of leverage for sustainable change.

Steve Byers is based in the Pacific Northwest, and is an interdependent consultant and trusted advisor who works with leaders, leadership teams, organizations and other communities seeking to establish or renew their essential conversation.  He focuses on helping human systems think, learn, and work together - better.

Steve is a graduate of the Organization Systems Renewal (OSR) program at Seattle University, where he learned to design and lead significant change through collaborative relationships. Much of his recent work has involved designing and hosting meaningful conversations in culturally diverse communities and organizations on such topics as employment and recreation for people with disabilities, access to health care in rural communities, strengthening families to prevent child abuse and neglect, and social determinants of health in immigrant communities. In Olympia he hosts the monthly First Wednesday Conversation about leadership, systems thinking, and inquiry.

Steve teaches a “systems thinking for leaders” course in the Masters in Leadership graduate program at St. Mary’s College of California. He is a volunteer instructor for Leadership Eastside, a non-profit organization dedicated to training leaders in the public sector.

Christine Rand

Christine Rand, formerly VP Marketing and Innovation for London based – Diageo, is currently serving as Managing Director of Rand Consulting LLC, a firm dedicated to working on “things that matter, and that can leave a positive impact on the world.”  Addressing issues such as gaps in early educational skills; financial literacy across all ages; challenges in leadership – Christine has turned her attentions to leveraging her extensive background in technology and global product marketing, to help solve the complex and interconnected challenges of the 21st century.

A global wanderer, Christine recently spent 7 years living and working abroad in China, Singapore and fascinating places in-between and has developed an insatiable quest for understanding cultures and their norms, particularly with respect to how every individual or small piece of knowledge ultimately fits together into one large global whole.  Imagining herself a part-time social anthropologist (or perhaps just nosy), she gratefully takes this awareness and applies it to her work in leadership.

A fiercely proud Saint Mary’s alumna and graduate of the Master of Arts in Leadership program, Christine is continuing her studies at NYU and working on an executive certificate in the financial planning program.  And, as a photographer of all things interesting and a forever admirer of the arts – Christine is currently working on publishing a portfolio of her work. Stay tuned... but in the meantime – let’s go work on something that matters!
