Saint Mary’s has received a $500,000 grant from the Fletcher Jones Foundation to establish a new scholarship fund. The new Fletcher Jones Foundation Endowed Scholarship Fund will help qualified under-resourced undergraduates at Saint Mary’s pay for their education.
The Root, an online hub of news and commentary from an African-American perspective, profiles SMC alumnus and successful Hollywood actor Mahershala Ali '96. In the article "Learn the name Mahershala Ali," the Saint Mary's grad is interviewed about his featured role in the new film "The Place Beyond The Pines," starring Ryan Gosling, his body of work, including the popular Netflix series "House of Cards," and how his time at Saint Mary's as one the few African American students on campus helped prepare him for his career. The New York Times recently spotlighted Saint Mary's alumna Paige Palmer '12. The newspaper's business section featured a story about how unemployed parents and their children are finding new employment opportunities by opening business franchises.
Saint Mary's 2013 undergraduate commencement speaker and alumnus Troy Nunley '86, a Sacramento Superior Court Judge, who was nominated by President Barack Obama to the federal bench, was confirmed by the United States Senate as a U.S.
Filmmaker Ryan Coogler, a former student at Saint Mary's, won the top prizes at the Sundance Film festival, the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for U.S. Dramatic film, for "Fruitvale," a film he wrote and directed about the tragic killing of unarmed Oscar Grant by a BART police officer on New Years Day in 2009.
