Filmmaker Magazine Notes "Fruitvale" Director's Ties to SMC

Filmmaker Ryan Coogler, a former student at Saint Mary's, won the top prizes at the Sundance Film festival, the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for U.S. Dramatic film, for "Fruitvale," a film he wrote and directed about the tragic killing of unarmed Oscar Grant by a BART police officer on New Years Day in 2009.

More than 145 paintings from the Saint Mary's College William Keith collection, including new acquisitions and newly restored paintings will be on view. The exhibition coincides with the publication of a important new book on the life and work of the great 19th century landscape painter -- The Comprehensive Keith, a 232 page volume with 262 new color images and extensive references.

Celebrating the History of SMC Alumnae

On Nov. 6, the SMC Women in Philanthropy Committee hosted "40 Years/One Night: A Gaela Celebration." The evening honored the achievements of women from the 1975 class (first to include female students) all the way through the most recent graduating class in 2009.

New Alumni Board of Directors Members

Alumni Board President David Johnson '84 welcomed seven new directors for 2010-2011. The board helps the alumni association and the College by exploring and supporting avenues of mutual engagement and service.

Alumni Return for Gael "Family" Reunion

Summer quiets Saint Mary's as many students leave for vacation, but in mid-July Saint Mary's welcomed many graduates home to the Moraga Hills. The campus teemed with nearly 350 alumni eager to rejoin their Saint Mary's family during Reunion Weekend.

"The sense of community is very strong. Some alumni groups call themselves, ‘The Family,' " said Brother President Ronald Gallagher.
