After knocking off Gonzaga in the WCC Championship on March 8, the men's basketball team swaggered into March Madness with enough charm and attitude to make even casual basketball fans, both nationally and internationally, want to know more about the College. Who is Saint Mary's, and how did it catapult so quickly to the national stage? And what secret ingredients did the College have to become one of the feel-good stories of the NCAA Tournament?

Celebrating Football's Legacy

A reception and dinner on February 27 honored the legacy of football at Saint Mary's, the first event of its kind since the College dropped the football program in 2004.

Women's Tennis Captures WCC Championship Title

The SMC women's tennis team won the first West Coast Conference Championship in school history on April 25 after beating No. 2 seeded Pepperdine, 4–1 in San Diego. The Gaels, who were seeded No. 1, won an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament in late May.

Former SMC baseball player Mark Teahen ’03 won the 2009 Hutch Award from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in November, and he will receive the award on Jan. 27 in Seattle.

The award is given to the Major League Baseball player who best exemplifies the courage and dedication of former pitcher and manager Fred Hutchinson, who died from cancer in 1964. As a Kansas City Royal, Teahen was a spokesman and fundraiser for a program that gave children with physical or mental challenges the chance to play baseball.

The men’s basketball team has a new look this year after losing five seniors to graduation and Patrick Mills to the NBA, but head coach Randy Bennett likes what he’s seen so far.

Men's Soccer Sets Records

For the first time ever, the men’s soccer team earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament after finishing second in the conference. The Gaels lost 0–3 to Stanford in the first round, but they finished the season with a 10–5–5 overall record, the best record in Saint Mary’s history. 

Volleyball Ranked No. 21 in Nation

Saint Mary’s women’s volleyball team capped a record-breaking season with an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the second round before being beaten by No. 3 Stanford in Palo Alto.

Head baseball coach Jedd Soto, the school's third-winningest coach since 1968 received a three-year contract extension in September, keeping him under contract through the 2012 season.

"I am proud to be part of building a tradition of excellence on and off the baseball field each year, and look forward to the challenge of elevating our program to the next level," Soto says.
