Local School Double-covered by Former SMC Hoops Stars

By John Leykam

It’s not surprising that former Gaels Eric Bamberger ’92 and Lindsay Lopez Wisely ’04 remain residents of Contra Costa County, since they were raised there and excelled as student-athletes at Saint Mary’s. Given the influence of the Christian Brothers, it’s also understandable that the two became educators.

It is unusual, however, that they’re teachers and head varsity basketball coaches at the same high school — Deer Valley in Antioch.

Coaching Changes in Women's Sports

At press time, the women's basketball program was in transition. Athletic Director Mark Orr announced in June that sixth-year head coach Michelle Jacoby would not return in 2006-07. Orr said he would initiate a national search for a new head coach.

That news came shortly after two new assistant coaches, including former Gael standout Tracy (Morris) Johnston '00, joined the program. Johnston and Tony Giannotti filled vacancies created when Jacoby's three former assistant coaches resigned in March.
