Sophomore Standout Brian Detrick Launches his 15th Ski Season

When he was 1 yr old, Brian Detrick's family built their home on a man-made water ski lake. Just two years later, Detrick learned to ski and entered his first competition at the age of 4yrs. Now in his sophomore year at Saint Mary’s College, Detrick is ready to launch his 15th season of Regional and National competition. In hot pursuit of going pro in the 2008-2009 season, Detrick is looking to build on the strength of his team, hoping many of his teammates will qualify Saint Mary’s for Nationals  (as a team)  and reach All-Stars (as individuals) in the fall.

The Gaels Announce Their Fall Schedule

The Gael's Fall schedule includes an exciting lineup. Follow the success of this Club Team as they compete at Sky Lake in Durham, CA and at the WCWSA Regional’s in Bakersfield this fall.

Waterski’s First Jive into the Season

Waterski season may have not started yet, but the club is grooving their way into a great start. On Friday night they hosted a black light dance, which created a profit of $1,800 for the club. The money from the dance will go towards the club’s travel, league expenses, equipment, and the cost of practice for the team. This season the clubs expects to get their new members involved, educated about the sport, and continue to practice to get better with team unity.

Five Gaels Seek Regional Competition

Lauren Groth `09, Renee Gistand `08, and Jessica Angelo ‘09 represented the Gaels in Pennsylvania this summer on the U-23 Pacific Coast All-Star Grizzlies team. In addition to the all-star Grizzlies team, Groth took part in the National All-Star 7’s Championship this summer as well.

2008-2009 Season Recap

Highlights of the Gaels' season this year include a Southern California tour and several upset wins. The Gaels launched a new era of Men's Lacrosse in 2008-09 by hiring All West Lacrosse Director, Colin Knightly as head coach of the Gaels.

In November, the team hosted an extremely successful 4th Annual Saint Mary's Invitational Tournament. In January, Men's Lacrosse paid tribute to the 20th Anniversary of Saint Mary's Men's Lacrosse at the annual alumni game and celebration.

SMC Magazine Publishes "Bringing Out the Best" Featuring Men's Rugby

August, 2008- The 2008 Gaels and Head Coach Tim O'Brien are currently featured in Erin Hallissy's article "Bringing out the Best." Hallissy chronicles O'Brien's success with the Gaels since coming to SMC in 2001, and includes several insights from former and current players and coaches, and avid rugby fans.

SMC Rugby Alum Voted IRANZ MVP and Vice-Captain

Recent SMC graduate, rugby All-American and All-Star Kevin Swiryn, has been given yet another honor. This time, it was awarded by his coaches and fellow attendees at the International Rugby Academy of New Zealand (IRANZ) High Performance camp.

Three Gaels Selected to All-American Touring Side

June 24, 2008--Boulder, Colo.

Three Saint Mary's rugby players will travel to New Zealand this July as part of the Collegiate All-American touring team.

Kevin Swiryn has been chosen for the team, and has also been named as the captain of the team during their tour. He will be joined on the trip by Saint Mary's teammates Chad Clark and Conor Coyne.

SMC Players Instrumental All-Star Championship Win

June 14, 2008--Glendale, Colo. The Pacific Coast RFU's Grizzly All-Star Team prevailed 46-29 over the Mustang All-Stars of the West RFU in a close match on Saturday, winning the National All-Star Collegiate championship.

Six Saint Mary's players were selected for the Grizzly team, including Conor Coyne, Matt Crawford, Matt Leatherby, Brendan O'Meara, Kevin Swiryn and Brandon Vedder.
