Pope Observations by Brother Charles Hilken Prompt Contra Costa Times Op-Ed, CBS-5, AP Interviews

Observations from papal history expert Brother Charles Hilken about the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI appeared in local and national news outlets this weekend. The Saint Mary's history professor, and chair of the Cummins Institute, also appeared on the KPIX-TV/CBS-5 Sunday morning news show with anchors Phil Matier and Anne Mackovec to discuss Benedict's decision to resign.

India-West Publishes SEBA Professor's Op-Ed About Delhi Rape

India-West featured an op-ed by SEBA Associate Professor Jyoti Bachani about the fatal gang-rape of a young woman on a Delhi bus in December 2012. Bachani, who recently completed a Fulbright in India, grew up in Delhi and writes about the contradictory perceptions of women in India and the country's long history of sexual harassment against women. KCBS and KGO Radio Speak to SMC Professors About Pope's Resignation

The surprise resignation of 85-year-old Pope Benedict XVI prompted two news radio outlets to reach out to Saint Mary's professors for commentary. KGO radio spoke with History Professor Brother Charles Hilken and KCBS radio spoke with Communication Professor Fr. Mike Russo about the resignation of the pontiff. The pope cited his age and declining health as the reasons for his resignation. The last time a pope resigned was 600 years ago.Both Hilken and Russo are Vatican scholars and have studied papal transitions in ancient and modern times.
