Alumni Office Gains New Staff

Michele Moore joined Alumni Relations in July 2005 as associate director. She comes to Saint Mary's from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where she was assistant director of alumni programs for two years. Originally from Southern California, Michele completed her undergraduate work in politics in 1998 at Mount Holyoke College. As associate director, Michele will be revitalizing regional alumni chapters, organizing reunions, and coordinating the Celebrity Waiter dinner.

2005 Alumni Award Winners

The Saint Mary's College of California Alumni Association and its board of directors honor several members of the College community each year for their service and contributions.

The results of the 2005 selections were announced last spring. Cal Scilacci '50, who has served on the Millennium Scholarship committee, Think Tank committee, and Gael Hall of Fame committee, was named Alumnus of the Year. Devoted volunteer Mary Don lon - whose husband Shane '64 as well as three of their four children graduated from Saint Mary's-was named Honorary Alumna.

Michael Boele, a member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors since 1999,was elected president of the board in July 2005. A Fresno native, Boele graduated in 1972 with a bachelor of science degree in economics. Now managing director of a St. Paul Travelers Insurance Company underwriting operations division, Boele resides with his wife, Maria, in Concord.

Men's Golf Earns Best-Ever Season with NCAA Berth

Men's golf appeared in last May's NCAA West regional championship field for the first time in its 34-year history. The Gael duffers advanced to the third round of the western regionals, finishing in a three-way tie for 14th place, after entering the tournament as a No. 15 seed. Twenty-seven teams competed in the regional at Stanford University.

Gael Hall of Fame Inducts Six Athletes and Soccer Squad

Legendary coaches, record-setting athletes, and a national championship soccer squad were inducted last May into the Gael Hall of Fame.

Men's Rugby Finishes no. 10 Nationally

The Saint Mary's College Men's Rugby team finished an excellent 2004–05 season with an appearance in the "Sweet Sixteen" of the USA Rugby national championship tournament in April. The ruggers also were rated No. 10 in the nation by one of the most authoritative rugby rankings, goffonrugby.com.

Brother John O'Neill, 2004 Professor of the Year, Walks in Socrates' Footsteps

"I felt like I just heard an Oracle," was the reaction of Brother John O'Neill, FSC, when he heard the news that he was chosen as Professor of the Year for 2004. Accepting the prestigious award last May in the Soda Center on campus, Brother John explained to the crowd this curious voice.

Brother Stan Sobczyk Fills Top Advancement Post

Brother Stanislaus Sobczyk, FSC, who held several posts at Saint Mary's College in the 1990s, returned to the College in July as interim vice president for advancement.

Brother Stan served as president of Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tennessee for the past six years. During his tenure there, he helped develop a sound financial base for the university, directing a number of physical improvements and construction of new facilities, and helping to raise scholarship monies.

New Home for School of Education to Benefit Entire Region

The new home for the Saint Mary's School of Education, due to break ground in late May 2006, will provide the critical first step towards achieving a new vision for the Moraga campus and help meet a growing demand for trained teachers.
