For 20 years, Karin McClelland-Anderer has been in the field of Lasallian education, leadership and volunteerism, working with students, families, educators and administrators to better education under the hardships of poverty. After receiving a B.A. in psychology from SMC, she earned an M.A. in counseling from Manhattan College in the Bronx and has used all her resources to combat adversity. She once rode a bike 4,000 miles across the country to promote literacy awareness.

Women of Influence: Dorothy (Benjamin) Jones '89, E '97

Dorothy (Benjamin) Jones is the director of college counseling at the Bay School of San Francisco. She first graduated from Saint Mary’s in 1989 and received her master’s in educational leadership in 1997, preparing her to enter the world of high school counseling. Jones served as the dean of admissions at SMC for 12 years and was at the College for 15 years. As the dean, Jones was the primary driver in shaping the undergraduate population of the College. Under her leadership, Saint Mary’s experienced broad increases in ethnic and socioeconomic diversity.

Women of Influence: Gilda Gonzales '87

Gilda Gonzalez graduated from Saint Mary’s with a degree in industrial psychology and a passion for business. She went on to earn a master’s in public administration from Cal State University, East Bay and became devoted to public service. She says the best advice she ever received was to start contributing to her 401(K) at the age of 25. Gonzalez is now CEO of the Unity Council, a nonprofit community development corporation committed to enriching the Fruitvale District of Oakland.
