The National Catholic Reporter includes Saint Mary's in its list of Catholic colleges and universities across the nation that have achieved fair trade status.

Saint Mary's College of California announces it has achieved a Fair Trade Status designation. Saint Mary's received the designation from Fair Trade Colleges & Universities, an initiative by Fair Trade Campaigns, a national collective of social justice institutions, such as Catholic Relief Services, Fair Trade Federation, Fair Trade USA and Green America, that are committed to increasing fairness and sustainability in global trade. The College is currently the only institution of higher education in Northern California to have received the distinction.

The Catholic News Service and the National Catholic Reporter both covered the recent visit of Brother Alvaro Rodriguez Echeverria, F.S.C., the superior general of the Christian Brothers, to Saint Mary's. The national outlets reported on Brother Alvaro's address on the importance of empowering the poor through globalization in education, which he delivered as the guest of honor at Saint Mary’s annual De La Salle Week Convocation on Wednesday, April 24.
