Application Process:

·         Applicants must submit all application materials (Common Application, high school transcript, a letter of recommendation, ACT or SAT scores) on or before January 15, 2016.

·         Additional application materials for the English Department Scholarship (see below) must be submitted via email to [email protected] by noon on January 15, 2016.

·         Invited applicants must interview on campus February 21, 2016 with faculty from the English department. Overnight accommodations may be available on Friday, February 20th given two weeks’ notice. The college may be able to assist in travel costs to students outside of Northern California; inquire at [email protected] for more information.

·         Students may only apply for one departmental scholarship.


Application Materials:

·         Two letters of recommendation, one to be written by the applicant’s junior or senior year high school English teacher.  

·         Two essays.  One explaining (750 words) why the applicant wishes to major in English; the second (1000-1750 words) analyzing a literary text.

·         Applicants may also include an example of their creative writing.



The recipient must major in English and contribute to English Department activities.  Such contributions might include assisting with the department website, working on the literary magazine, or helping to organize English Club events.


The English Department awards one academic scholarship in the amount of $13,000 for each of four years of consecutive full-time study to a highly-qualified and highly-motivated entering freshman majoring in English.

AAUW-OML Scholarships and Awards

The Orinda-Moraga-Lafayette branch of AAUW offers:

  • A $5000 scholarship and two $800 runners-up scholarships to senior women from the local high schools: Miramonte in Orinda, Campolindo in Moraga, and Acalanes in Lafayette
  • A $5000 scholarship to one senior woman from Saint Mary’s College in Moraga

The AAUW is dedicated to making a positive impact on our local and global community by promoting education, empowering women and girls, and by supporting personal and professional growth. Candidates should have demonstrated their commitment to our ideal. Recipients will receive recognition at the AAUW-OML Awards Celebration in April. Awardees will be expected to attend the meeting and give a brief speech about their accomplishments and aspirations. Scholarship checks are issued after proof of college registration is provided.

If you share our vision, have an excellent academic record (3.0 or better) and have been involved in service to your school and/or community, we invite you to apply. Or if you know a graduating high school senior who fulfills the scholarship criteria, please encourage her to apply.
