Brenda Hillman sees metaphors all around her. Like the time she was at Point Reyes feeling panicky about returning to teaching after a sabbatical, and she saw a heron go into a pond and snatch a frog.

Women's Tennis Captures WCC Championship Title

The SMC women's tennis team won the first West Coast Conference Championship in school history on April 25 after beating No. 2 seeded Pepperdine, 4–1 in San Diego. The Gaels, who were seeded No. 1, won an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament in late May.

Applications Reach Record Level

At the first year student application deadline in February, applications totaled 3,706 — the highest in College history. The number is 18.6 percent higher than last year and 15.9 percent higher from the average of the previous four years.
Vice Provost for Enrollment Michael Beseda attributes part of the increase to strategic recruitment initiatives, including improved communications messages and materials, targeting and development of new recruitment territories and an online portal for every undergraduate prospective student.

SMC Stages Alumna's Play on Pompeii

Saint Mary's Performing Arts spring theater production, "Sera," is a haunting and surprisingly funny play about the final hours of the ancient city Pompeii before it disappears under Mt. Vesuvius' volcanic eruption.
