Alum Searches for Solutions for the Displaced

Since delivering the 2005 undergraduate commencement address, Gilburt Loescher ’67 has toured refugee camps along the 1,500-mile Thai–Burmese border, written two books about the plight of the dispossessed and continued teaching and research at the University of Oxford.

Two women’s basketball players received all-WCC honors: guard Jontelle Smith earned a spot on the WCC All-Conference Team and forward Louella Tomlinson was named to the All-Freshman Team. Tomlinson broke the NCAA women’s Division I record for blocks in a single season, totaling 156.

Six Saint Mary’s athletes were named to the fall 2007 WCC All-Academic team: Mario Mendoza and Karrie Hagedorn (cross country), Taylor Groess (volleyball), and Dave Blanchard, Corey Heldereth and Dylan Leslie (soccer).

New Members Inducted Into Athletic Hall of Fame

Seven Gaels were inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in April, and the undefeated 1988 football team was honored, during lunch and a ceremony in the Soda Center. The members are:

Rick Bernard ’78, men’s basketball: Bernard is the No. 7 career scorer for the Gaels with 1,291 points, and No. 5 in career free-throws made. He was also honored this year as No. 17 on the All-Century Top 25 Team.
