The men’s baseball team heads into its 2009 season with high hopes, led by junior outfielder Kyle Jensen — who earned national and conference honors after a sophomore season in which he set a Saint Mary’s batting-average record of .421.

Denis Kelly '60: The Real Deal

Denis Kelly ’60 loves telling stories, cooking food, drinking wine and writing, so it’s not surprising that he authors cookbooks, judges wine competitions, teaches grilling techniques and ran restaurants and wine shops in Berkeley and Oakland during the 1970s, when a food revolution started in California.

MFA Professor Lysley Tenorio received a 2008 Whiting Award at a ceremony on Oct. 29 in New York City. The coveted $50,000 prizes recognize 10 young writers and have been given annually since 1985. Past recipients include Michael Cunningham, Mary Karr, Tobias Wolff and Jeffrey Eugenides. Tenorio recently completed a collection of short stories, some of which have appeared in The Atlantic and The Chicago Tribune. He writes mainly about first-generation Filipino immigrants in California.

The 38th Annual President’s Club Dinner Dance was held for the first time on the Saint Mary’s campus in October 2008, drawing more than 300 members and friends to the Soda Center to celebrate the College’s 80th anniversary in Moraga.

In describing a Middle East ruled by undemocratic governments that violate human rights, Iranian Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi told a College audience that U.S. foreign policy often contributes to the region’s negative status quo.

Honors Program Growing

The Honors Program is now in its second year at Saint Mary’s, with about 30 sophomores and 60 freshmen who will study and, in many cases, live in the same residence halls throughout their undergraduate years.

Honors students have opportunities to receive scholarships, earn honors course credit, contribute to scholarly research and creative projects under faculty direction and develop leadership skills.

Honors students also have positive interaction with other students, says chemistry professor Jeff Sigman.
