LUNAFEST Film Festival

LUNAFEST™, the fundraising film festival dedicated to promoting awareness about women’s issues, highlighting women filmmakers, and bringing women together in their communities, will be hosted by the Women's Resource Center on Wednesday, January 22nd.  This unique film festival highlights women as leaders in society, illustrated through nine short films by women filmmakers. The films range from animation to fictional drama, and cover topics such as women’s health, motherhood, body image, sexuality, cultural diversity, and breaking barriers.

Rape Culture is a phrase that has become more frequently used in the recent news media, but do we really know what it means and how it affects us? How can we ensure that the topic of "rape culture" continues in our conversations and does not fade out as a trendy buzz word? This program will feature a peer-led discussion aroudn the concept of rape culture and offers strategies to combat it in our daily lives.

World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day was first observed in 1988. It was initiated by Health Ministers from around the world. World AIDS Day is about increasing awareness, fighting prejudice and improving education. On this day, people from around the world are encouraged to educate themselves about the reality of HIV/AIDS. More importantly, it also calls upon governments to keep the commitments they have made to fight the deadly disease. World AIDS Day is important for reminding people that HIV has not gone away ad that there are many things still to be done.

Celebrating Latinas Luncheon

This program will serve as a platform for Latina alums of SMC to share their experiences transitioning out of college and into the workplace, while in some cases, also balancing important roles within their families. It will also serve as a place for undergraduate Latinas and alums to network, ask questions and share experiences. Everyone is welcome.

Catalina Torres Night to Remember

As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Women’s Resource Center is putting on the third annual 'Catalina Torres Night to Remember'. There will be a speak out, a walk around campus, and a candle light vigil on the steps of the chapel. Students, staff, faculty, and community members will have the opportunity to stand up against domestic violence and honor one of SMC's own who lost her life to domestic violence in 2008.
