Take Back the Night

Take Back the Night is an evening of speaking out against sexual assault and domestic violence.

Students, staff, and community members will play music, dance, read poetry, share stories,

perform monologues, and honor sexual assault survivors and victims. A march around the

campus and a candle light vigil will follow the performances.

The first Take Back the Night event in the United States took place in Philadelphia in October of

1975. Citizens of Philadelphia rallied together after the murder of young microbiologist, Susan

Denim Day

Denim Day History: In 1992 an 18-year-old in Italy was picked up by her driving instructor to

begin a driving lesson. Soon after she was raped on the side of the road by the instructor.

She pressed charges and won her case. The instructor appealed, and the case went to the

Italian High Court. In 1999 the court overturned the conviction with a member of the High

Court declaring that since the victim wore very tight jeans, the instructor could not have

removed them himself, therefore the victim must have willingly participated. Women of Italian

Women's Perspectives on Careers in Social Justice

This panel is comprised of innovative women who cared about social justice so much that

they made careers out of it. These women will talk about how choosing social justice oriented

careers ultimately allowed them to live lives of congruence, that aligned with their value

systems. Attendees of this program will leave with a better sense of how to translate passion

and compassion into a career they'll love.

Wo/Men's Leadership Conference

With an emphasis on recognizing human dignity and promoting the common good, this

conference will highlight efforts to improve equal participation for all in the economic, political,

and cultural life of our own country and societies around the globe. These concerns and efforts

are central to Catholic Social Teaching and the mission of SMC. "Excessive economic and

social disparity between individuals and peoples of the one human race is a source of scandal

and militates against social justice, equity, human dignity, as well as social and international

Tribute to Women of African Descent

The goal is to give a voice to the alums of African descent and provide a safe place for women

to network and share experiences of transitioning from student to a member of the workforce

or graduate school.

The event will include a delicious lunch and a panel discussion. There will be a Q &A portion

where you can talk to SMC alumni and other women of African descent about issues in the

work place, transitioning from school to the work force, struggles women face in terms of

racism and sexism.

V-DAY: Until the Violence Ends

creative events to increase awareness, raise money, and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-

violence organizations.

Using monologues from Eve Ensler's famous play, 'The Vagina Monologues', SMC's V-Day will

bring inspiring, heartbreaking, hilarious, and eye opening stories to the stage for the 10 th year in

a row.

Speaker Connie Sobczak, Founder of The Body Positive

In 1996, Connie Sobczak and Elizabeth Scott, LCSW, founded The Body Positive because of

their shared passion to help people cherish their bodies in order to lead healthier and more

meaningful lives. Together, they developed a series of innovative educational materials

and workshops to teach people of all ages the common sense tools and creative strategies

necessary to become free from body hatred and self-destructive eating and exercise

behaviors. The Body Positive works with adults and youth in a variety of settings to support

The Alternative College Experience: Being a Student and a Parent

Being a student is a big responsibility, but being a student and a parent at the same time is

an even bigger responsibility. Members of this panel will share their experiences navigating

the responsibilities of school and parenting at the same time. They will talk about some of the

obstacles that they encountered along the way, some of the resources that helped them cope,

and will candidly share some of the things they learned from balancing the important roles of

student and parent.
