How can we ensure that the topic of "rape culture" continues in our conversations and does not fade out as a trendy buzz word? This program will feature a peer-led discussion aroudn the concept of rape culture and offers strategies to combat it in our daily lives.

Love Your Body Week

Multiple events will take place during this week that focus on self esteem, self love, health, and well being. The WRC is partnering with the Health and Wellness Center and Counseling and Psychological Services to bring attention to eating disorders as well as to address the messages we all get from the media that we need to change our bodies in order to be happy.

World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day was first observed in 1988. It was initiated by Health Ministers from around the world. World AIDS Day is about increasing awareness, fighting prejudice and improving education. On this day, people from around the world are encouraged to educate themselves about the reality of HIV/AIDS. More importantly, it also calls upon governments to keep the commitments they have made to fight the deadly disease. World AIDS Day is important for reminding people that HIV has not gone away ad that there are many things still to be done.

Denim Day

Denim Day History: In 1992 an 18-year-old in Italy was picked up by her driving instructor to begin a driving lesson. Soon after she was raped on the side of the road by the instructor. She pressed charges and won her case. The instructor appealed, and the case went to the Italian High Court. In 1999 the court overturned the conviction with a member of the High Court declaring that since the victim wore very tight jeans, the instructor could not have removed them himself, therefore the victim must have willingly participated.

Celebrating Latinas Luncheon

This program will serve as a platform for Latina alums of SMC to share their experiences transitioning out of college and into the workplace, while in some cases, also balancing important roles within their families. It will also serve as a place for undergraduate Latinas and alums to network, ask questions and share experiences. Everyone is welcome.

Catalina Torres Night to Remember

As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Women’s Resource Center is putting on the third annual 'Catalina Torres Night to Remember'. There will be a speak out, a walk around campus, and a candle light vigil on the steps of the chapel. Students, staff, faculty, and community members will have the opportunity to stand up against domestic violence and honor one of SMC's own who lost her life to domestic violence in 2008.

Re-Thinking Pink Breast Cancer Luncheon

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In honor of this, the WRC partners with Public Safety and other campus departments to host a fundraising luncheon where staff, faculty, and students can learn more about the impact of breast cancer while raising money for the cause.

Tribute to Women of African Descent

The goal is to give a voice to the alums of African descent and provide a safe place for women to network and share experiences of transitioning from student to a member of the workforce or graduate school.

The event will include a delicious lunch and a panel discussion. There will be a Q &A portion where you can talk to SMC alumni and other women of African descent about issues in the work place, transitioning from school to the work force, struggles women face in terms of racism and sexism.

LGBTQIA Luncheon

In honor of National Coming Out Day, the Women’s Resource Center and partners are presenting a lunchtime panel discussion called ‘Changing Perceptions.’ We have invited an ethnically diverse group of SMC students who identify as part of the LGBTQIA Community to share stories, experiences, rewards, trials, and challenges. This program will have an emphasis on the unique experiences of LGBTQIA students of color.
