minimum requirements
In order to use the SMC wireless network, you will need a properly configured wireless 802.11b or 802.11g network adapter for your laptop. PC-Card adapters are readily available for about $80 - $150, and many notebook and laptop computers are now available with built-in support for 802.11b networks (eg. Apple iBooks and IBM ThinkPads). In summary, before you can begin using SMC Wireless Zone, there are a few steps you must take.
- You will need a laptop computer, either already equipped with a wireless network adapter or with an open wireless card slot. Many vendors provide 802.11b compatible hardware that should work in the SMC wireless environment.
- All Intel based PC's - running Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, NT, XP Professional, or Home Edition
- Macintosh iBook, iMac and PowerBooks - running 7.x to 9.x and Mac OS X
(Note: Base networking software is now included with almost every computer's pre-installed operating system. The installer that comes with the 802.11b hardware may add some hardware-specific software.) - If your computer does not already have a wireless network adapter, install an 802.11b compatible wireless network card for your computer. While there are many available, we have successfully tested some of the most popular on SMC wireless network.
- Cisco Aironet 352
- Lucent Orinoco
- Apple Airport (for MACs)
- Your wireless card must be configured to use the SSID (network name) of the SMC Wireless Zone, which is smc-wifi. (Note: In some configuration utilities the SSID is identified as the network name, network identifier or network tag.)
