Web Services maintains the blogs for Saint Mary's College. Blogs can be used to get a series of timely messages to the public (such as with the President's blogs) or they can be used as a means to get feedback and comments about a topic. Blogs are run through the Saint Mary's College weblog engine, Expressions Engine.
Blogs come in 2 standard templates that will look similar to the main Saint Mary's website.
Blog Features:
1) Comments: Can be turned off or on. Comments can come from all users or only those which are pre-approved by a designated moderator.
2) Images: Add additional photographs to personalize the blog.

The system uses SMCnet log-in methods, commenting is thereby restricted to within the SMC community. To use Brickpile go to the Brickpile homepage at: https://smcnet.stmarys-ca.edu/discussion and log in with your SMCnet username and password.
To request this service: To use Brickpile you must be a SMC student, faculty or staff member. To use Brickpile go to the Brickpile homepage at: http://www.smcnet.stmarys-ca.edu/discussion and log in with your SMCnet username and password.
The SMC BCPT site is available to SMC department heads, deans and etc for the purpose of managing business continuity in the event of a disaster. This tool will help your department prepare for those adverse events both wide in scope (earthquake, fire, pandemic, terrorism, civil disturbance) or local in scope (failure of your hard drive!). The goal of business continuity planning is to enable us to continue the campus' "business" despite any disaster that befalls us.
Contribute is the college's Web Content Management System (CMS).
Adobe Contribute software, when installed on a user's computer, enables them to update their portions of the Saint Mary's web site. Currently there are 70 or more
Contribute users managing their content using Contribute. Hundreds of
changes and updates are made every week using this system.
Notes:
You will only be able to work on Contribute and update your web site while on campus.
While Contribute can update the public website (http://www.stmarys-ca.edu) it is unable to update SMCnet (https://smcnet.stmarys-ca.edu). All requests for updating SMCnet must go through Web Services.

The web services team has a standard video player for all videos shown on our website.
Our video player is built with Adobe Flash. The benefits of the video player being built in Flash are that most users already have Flash installed in their browsers. The player will open up in the browser window without having to open up another application, such as RealPlayer or QuickTime.
Final File Format Delivered to Web Services:
The optimal file we would like to be delivered is .flv
Other files accepted (we will convert these to .flv):
.mov
.mpeg2
.mpeg4
.avi
.swf - this needs to be sized to 470 px x 322 px (or smaller) before being delivered to web services.
dvd - if you burn your video onto a dvd, as a dvd movie, we can convert that as well.
Optimal length (time) of video:
Because we do not have a streaming server, we recommend videos being no longer than 4 minutes long. Videos longer than four minutes may be loaded to a video sharing website such as YouTube. A link can then be provided to this video and placed on your web page.
Width and Height of video:
If the video is going to be put on one of our pages (not in a pop up window) the maximum width of the video will be 470 px. It can be smaller than 470 px but not greater. The height of the video can be up to you, we recommend 322 px if your width is 470 px.
Size of video:
If video will be placed on our servers the max size is 30 MB.
Examples of videos on the site:

The image rotator is a tool that allows users to create an online photo "slideshow" to post on their department web pages. Faculty and staff who are currently using Contribute to edit their pages can now build their own slideshows with the image rotator. If you have never created an image rotator we recommend that you contact Web Services. We can walk you through all of the proper steps to successfully complete your first slideshow.
If you are not a Contribute user
yet and would still like to have a slideshow created to post on your
department web pages please contact Web Services.
Slideshows are typically no larger than 470px wide and they can be much smaller (see examples below).
Slideshows can also have sound to accompany them (see examples below).
Examples of Slideshows/Image Rotators:
News and Events - click on links to see slideshows
Student Involvement and Leadership - has mini-slideshow on their landing page which includes sound.
Image Rotator How to Document:
http://www.stmarys-ca.edu/rotator/docs/ImageRotatorHowTo.pdf
