1/8/2011--All three Gael sides won their matches Saturday at Loyola Marymount University.
The 3rd side game, played against Loyola's B side, was won handily, with the Gaels scoring several tries in the second half. The score was reported to be around 35 or 40 to 10 or so. January transfer Garrett Brewer made all of the Gael’s conversions.
The Gael’s 2nd team overcame an experienced LMU A Side, and was still victorious 22-15.
The 1st side match against the Los Angeles Rugby Club was a barn burner. The Gaels scored twice early on, which were eventually answered by LA, bringing the score to a tie it at 14. SMC scored again just before the half to make it 19-14.
LA came out strong and scored twice in the first five minutes. The Gaels added an unconverted try to make it 26-24 in favor of LA, early in the period. With less than 15 minutes to play, SMC scored to make it 29-26. With less than ten minutes, the gusty Gaels dug deep and scored three tries to their opponents one and took the game out of contention at the 75 minute mark, winning it 48 to 31 at the close. There were too many stand-outs in this game to begin mentioning names in this heart-filled win, however Joey Reavey, a freshman, stepped in at scrum half, after just playing 80 minutes in the 2nd team victory, and did an admirable job.
The Gaels are currently preparing for next week’s game against Stanford and Sierra College.
