"...many inmates, especially those in minority religions, currently do not receive the religious rights to which they are entitled under law."

Model prison religious accommodation policies in compliance with the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution and relevant statutes, in particular RLUIPA and RFRA, should ensure religious rights and be neutral, equitable, and unbiased. However, that is not the situation in many jurisdictions.  As a consequence, many inmates, especially those in minority religions, currently do not receive the religious rights to which they are entitled under law. The Center’s Prison Religion Project addresses that need by providing materials on foundational principles underlying model policies and policy suggestions.
