If I choose to pursue a major in Theology & Religious Studies at Saint Mary's College, what courses will I take?

The major in Theology & Religious Studies consists of a minimum of 10 courses:

Lower Division Course

  • TRS 97: The Bible and Its Interpretation

Upper Division Courses

  • TRS 169: Theory and Method in the Study of Religion
  • Five area courses (one class from each of the following areas, chosen in consultation with the chair):
    • Christian History
    • Scripture
    • Contemporary Christian Thought
    • Ethics
    • World Religions
  • Three elective courses (chosen in consultation with the chair)

TRS Majors are encouraged to take the “Intensive Inquiry” course offered in a specific TRS area (such as Christian History or Scripture) each semester by the department. "Intensive Inquiry" courses are designed to offer students who have already taken two Theology & Religious Studies classes an opportunity to pursue particular areas of study in a more focused and in-depth manner than is usually possible in regular TRS coursework.
