It may be Academy Awards season, but on the Saint Mary's campus, the big awards ceremony of the week was the inaugural Faculty Awards, which were given out Friday night during the Ninth Annual Scholars Reception.
"We have so many outstanding faculty who excel in all areas of teaching, service and scholarship that we will never exhaust the possibilities for recognition of them," said Provost Beth Dobkin. "These awards enable us to acknowledge and celebrate particular strengths of individual faculty members, in addition to the broadest career achievement award, Professor of the Year."
Three faculty members were honored with awards, which each carried a $5,000 stipend. They went to:
Associate Professor Catherine Marachi, chair of the Modern Languages Department, who received the Teaching Excellence award.
Professor of History Carl Guarneri, who was honored with the Research Scholar award.
Assistant Professor Jyoti Bachani of the Graduate Business Program, who received the Early Career Award and was lauded as a "charismatic, scholarly young faculty member."
The awards were presented by Chemistry Professor Steve Bachofer, director of faculty development.
The event, held in Saint Albert's Library, was hosted by Provost Dobkin, along with Deans Jerry Brunetti of the School of Education, Roy Wensley of the School of Science, Stephen Woolpert of the School of Liberal Arts and Zhan Li of the School of Economics and Business Administration, who wove through the crowd with plates of hors d'oeuvres.
Sharon Walters, interim dean for Academic Resources, welcomed the dozens of faculty members in attendance, and Dobkin praised the faculty for their efforts during the year. She also noted a number of initiatives during the past year designed to support the faculty, including the first Writer's Retreat at the Christian Brothers' retreat in Napa, the new Writing Center and increased funds for faculty development.
After the awards, Elizabeth Gallagher, director of corporate and foundation relations, spoke to the faculty about opportunities for grants to support their research and teaching. Throughout the event, an animated PowerPoint presentation designed by Communication Professor Edward Tywoniak chronicled the research and scholarship of Saint Mary's faculty members during the past year.
