Tom Meschery '61.
Capping the celebration of 100 years of SMC basketball, Tom Meschery ’61 was honored in February as the No. player on the All-Century Team and the only player to have his number (31) retired. The 6-6 forward played from 1957–61 and averaged 16.7 points and a school-record 13.5 rebounds per game. The only SMC basketball player to be inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame, Meschery’s number (14) was retired by the Warriors organization in the 1970s.
The No. SMC player was Daniel Kickert ’06, the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,874 points. Kickert, a 6-10 Australian, set a freshman record with 380 points. A three-time All-WCC selection, he helped take the Gaels to the NCCA Tournament in 2005. He played in a record 123 games, starting each one.
At No. was LaRoy Doss ’59, who played from 1956–59 and was key to the 1958–59 team that advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. Doss was a three-time All-WCAC selection and named the WCAC Player of the Year in 1959. For his career, Doss averaged 14.8 points and 9.2 rebounds per game, and he currently ranks 14th all-time in scoring and sixth all-time in career rebounds.
