The Gaels’ final regular season game against San Jose State (3-6, 2-3) this weekend seems to be all but a formality. They are coming off of a weekend in which they outscored two league opponents 34-6, including a 14-1 win over Pacific and a 20-5 decision over then second ranked Nevada, clinching their second straight WCLL regular season title and #1 seeding in the conference tournament. The Gaels are hoping to capture their 3rd straight WCLL Championship and 5th overall, which would tie the current record held by former conference member San Diego.
In the playoffs they will be pitted against the #4 seed Humboldt State Lumberjacks (3-6, 2-3) a team the Gaels beat 9-4 on April 14th. The Jacks earned their ticket by upsetting San Jose State last week. Saint Mary’s holds the overall series 7-2 and this will be the first postseason game between the two teams. The game will take place at 9:00 am on Saturday May 5th at Novato High School.
The winner will face the winner of the #2 vs #3 game. That game will be between UC Santa Cruz and Nevada. The two teams will play on Saturday in the final game of the regular season to decide seeding. In last years semifinal game Nevada had their hopes of upsetting #1 Saint Mary’s fell just short as the Wolfpack squandered a halftime lead and lost 6-4. UC Santa Cruz is looking to qualify for their 5th straight WCLL Division II Championship Game. If they meet Saint Mary’s the Slugs and the Gaels will be playing for the title for the 4th straight time. UC Santa Cruz is 1-3 in the title game and 1-2 against the Gaels.
Winning the remaining games is a necessity for the Gaels as they continue their quest for a bid to the MCLA National Tournament. They are currently ranked #13 in the nation. All playoff games will be played at Novato High School. The Championship game will be 11:45 am on Sunday May 6th.
