JEEPNEE INTERNATIONAL, PHILIPPINES AND CALIFORNIA: Vocational Manpower Sourcing and Training and Sustainable Business Model Assessment Project in the Philippines, India and Thailand
Jeepnee Inc. is a recruiting and placement startup, with a turnkey solution to provide US employers access to a qualified global workforce. The company holds core competencies in international recruitment and training to retool employed manpower pools in developing countries. The company has operations in the U.S. and the Philippines that currently focuses on providing healthcare, information technology, education, finance and accounting professionals employment with companies based in the United States, which are currently unable to find hard-to-hire professionals in these areas due to skill shortages. The goals of the project include assessing the VET potential and demand-supply gaps for the four focus areas in the U.S. for supply of trained individuals to fill the hard to hire positions from the Philippines, Thailand and India. Another major goal is to identify training institutions in the three countries to train the manpower for filling these positions. A focus will be on training and placing the disadvantaged at the base of the economic pyramid.
CAVITE PROVINCE AND DE LA SALLE UNIVERSITY, DAS MARINAS, PHILIPPINES: Business, Livelihood and Sustainable Enterprise Development Project at the bottom of the pyramid (BoP) in the Cavite Development Research Program in Cavite Province, Philippines
The Cavite Development Research Program (CDRP) and De La Salle University - Dasmariñas Institutional Research Thrusts (DLSUD-IRT) focus on research thrust areas that provide the context and the content for direct relevant policies as the province of Cavite undergoes huge structural changes in the next 50 years. Each of the research thrust areas provides synergy to each other and can be addressed jointly or independently depending on resource availability.
The goal of the (Social Services Management (SoServMan) study is to systematically and collect global best-practice information and business/financial models regarding BoP social enterprise and Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) business formation, business skills transfer and training in traditional SME and BoP settings worldwide to sustain these skills through the encouragement/assistance of BoP social entrepreneurship and Micro-Finance Institutions (MFIs) micro-enterprise development through government, public-private and private sources. The goal is to catalyze and accelerate social and economic inclusion and development in Cavite province by bridging economic and human development gaps at the BoP and SME through the development of an effective system of social enterprise and business formation, skills development and transfer and assistance in setting up micro and SME enterprises in Cavite province.
INSTITUTE FOR SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT (ISMED) IN BANGKOK, THAILAND: Rural BoP to Worldwide Customer Supply Chain Development for Hemp and Related Products Project for Income and Employment Generation at the BoP
The Institute for Small and Medium Enterprise Development (ISMED) is the organization established by the Royal Thai Government in 1999 to coordinate the development of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Thailand. ISMED is working with a large number of rural organizations and farmer cooperatives to develop a streamlined production source for hemp that is grown by those at the bottom of the economic pyramid (BOP) in Thailand to supply their produce to the urban and city areas in Thailand and worldwide. The current project is to understand the world-wide best practices in the establishment and operation of the hemp and related products supply chain and make recommendations for establishing new supply chains as well as rationalizing existing supply chain elements to help the BoP producers and suppliers success and establish sustainable businesses for livelihood creation, increased employment and development of sustainable practices.
INSTITUTE FOR SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT (ISMED) IN BANGKOK, THAILAND: International Visitor Retirement and Sustainable Medical Tourism Development and in Thailand
ISMED has been asked by the Royal Thai Government to investigate the development of sustainable retirement tourism clusters in Thailand targeting international retirement markets in North America, Europe and Asia. The objective of this ISMED project is Identify and recommend the target market segment(s) in the United States that would most benefit from the provision of relatively low-cost but high-quality retirement facilities in Thailand. Another objective is to document the best practice business models (organizational, management and operating), funding models and partnership along with the best practices for sustainable retirement tourism and medical tourism from the United States. An important objective is to provide employment and livelihoods to poor Thais at the BoP through the development of retirement and medical tourism clusters.
INSTITUTE FOR SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT (ISMED) IN BANGKOK, THAILAND: Rural and Peri-Urban Small Hotel Network and Small Business Network Business Model Development Project for Income and Employment Generation at the BOP
The objective of this project to develop a sustainable network of rural and semi-urban hotels in the Thailand to provide for the sustained development of such hotels with the commensurate income and employment generation potential. The goal of this SoServMan study is to systematically collect global best-practice information and business models for small hotel and small business network development in Thailand. This is done through a comprehensive secondary and primary analysis of best practices in Thailand and other countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America, North America and Europe; identification of best practice business and funding models to sustain such a small hotel network; and the development of a sustainable business plan to employ poor Thais at the BoP to provide them with sustainable livelihoods.
ZIQITZA HEALTHCARE SERVICES LIMITED, MUMBAI, INDIA: Best Practice Business and Funding Models Study for 1298 Ambulance Services
ZHL and Dial 1298 for Ambulance have been very successful in meeting their objectives and mission since the years they were established in 2005. However, the organization faces a number of constraints that it would like to overcome. The present study is aimed at understanding and overcoming some of these challenges and constraints. In order to focus the work on this project and try to provide innovative alternatives for the long-term financial and ecosystem sustainability of ZHL and Dial 1298 for Ambulance, the following two major areas were identified for this project:
• Investigation of world-wide BoP best practices to structure and fund/finance BPL emergency medical services in a sustainable long-term manner
• Investigation of the best-practice business models worldwide to develop scale up ZHL/1298 services across urban and peri-urban India as well as investigate the business models and funding strategies to provide EMS and related services in rural India
The project is currently under research and investigation and the results of the study will be available in July 2013.
DON BOSCO BALPRAFULTA CHILD SERVICES, MUMBAI, INDIA: Base of Economic Pyramid (BoP) Child Labor Prevention and Child Development Best Practices and Sustainability Study
The main purpose of Don Bosco Balprafulta in community intervention is to protect the rights of children at the community level and create opportunities for their healthy growth and development. Based in K-East ward in Mumbai, this community based project works towards building groups of children (Balsanghatana) within communities and empowering them.
The main objective of this project is to research and investigate child rights and child care services at the BoP in India and make recommendations to improve delivery of integrated BoP child rights, child labor prevention and child development services through sustainable management and delivery practices and partnerships. This objective is to be achieved by understanding the worldwide sustainable best practice business models, funding models and operation best practices for integrated child rights, prevention of child labor, childcare, children’s healthcare, nutrition and pre-school education, for delivery at the BoP, in Brazil, Thailand, Vietnam and other relevant developing countries, contextualized within their policy frameworks to be applicable to India.
DON BOSCO RESEARCH CENTER, MUMBAI, INDIA: ConnectAll India BOP Community Capacity Building, Enterprise Development and Income Generation Global Best Practices Study
The Don Bosco Research Centre, set up in 2009, is an organization that works towards ensuring social and financial inclusion among the marginalized in India who are not served by the government’s programs and private initiatives to help the poor. The primary goal of the organization is to reach out to the unreached sections of society.
Connect All India (CAI) is an initiative which reaches out to the unreached sections of Indian society by promoting social and financial inclusion. To do this, it adopts a three pronged approach – strengthening livelihood through capacity building and training, income generation, asset creation, savings and credit. Towards this end, Connect All India has initiated tailoring ventures, installation of smokeless chullas (stoves), insurance and pension schemes and implementation of no-frill accounts. CAI networks with public, private sector institutions and civil society institutions (NGO) in order to provide the marginalized with unchallenged and inviolable proofs of identity and access to financial services.
The Connect All India Community Capacity Building, Enterprise Development and Income Generation Study will provide global best-practice information and business models to integrate, consolidate and scale up Connect All India’s existing initiatives in the areas of BoP community capacity building and training; income generation; asset creation in health and education; and financial inclusion and their expansion in to new areas, with the objective of catalyzing and accelerating community development and social and economic inclusion through NGO partnerships by bridging economic and human development gaps at the BoP. The focus will be on financial inclusion, enterprise development and livelihood creation by developing a design for fitting together the different components of the Connect All India Social and Financial Inclusion programmes:

TIRUMAKUDAL NARSIPUR VILLAGE DEVELOPMENT AGENCY, MYSORE DISTRICT, KARNATAKA STATE, INDIA: Sustainable Livelihood Creation, Social Services Provision and Sustainable Enterprise Development Project at the BoP
Tirumakudal Narsipur (TNpur) is a town in the southern state of Karnataka (formerly known as Mysore State) India. It is the government center of Tirumakudal Narsipur taluk (county) consisting of approximately 100 small villages with a total county population of about 300,000. TNpur is located approximately 20 miles from the city of Mysore (former capitol of the State) and about 90 miles from the city of Bangalore (current capitol of the State) and considered the IT center of India. TNP county is primarily a farm community and minimal industries such as rice and flour mills and brick factories.
The main objective of this project is to understand the worldwide best practices in livelihood creation, social service provision, community enterprise development, MFI support of such development, skills transfer and training and BoP micro and SME development addressing systems, strategic, organizational, operational, logistics, technology, marketing and supply chain issues as well as the best practice business models developed in Asia, Latin America and Africa as well as Europe and North America for such social enterprise and business development. The ultimate goal is to identify the government initiation and support systems for such development as well as the sustainable private sector business models and initiatives and the public-private partnership models that will work best in the Indian context in Narsipur.

Children’s Hospital of Mbarara, Uganda
Financial and Sustainability Plan for Sustained Growth
The Holy Innocents Children’s Hospital (HICH) of Uganda was set up in 2009 with donor funds and the technical help of the Children’s Hospital of Oakland and the University of San Diego. While it is currently functioning well and is the only private children’s hospital in all of Uganda, it does not currently have a long-term financial and business sustainability plan. The Saint Mary's TGEMBA project team will develop a long-term sustainable funding and social enterprise compatible business plan. The team will examine best-practice business, finance and organization models to make recommendations regarding the best strategy for HICH to become sustainable and provide for an internally-financed growth plan.
Virunga Artisans and Batwa Development Organization
Community Social Enterprise Development and Women Weaver’s Improvement Project
Virunga Artisans (www.VirungaArt.com) was founded in 2006 as a social profit enterprise operating in the remote communities surrounding mountain gorilla habitat in Rwanda, Uganda and DR Congo. The founders manage the company as volunteers and all profits are reinvested in conservation and sustainable business development for women and the forest people. The mission of Virunga is to improve the lives and livelihoods of the most disenfranchised populations in the remote Virunga Massif and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest by helping them build sustainable businesses within their communities. Virunga Artisans (VA) works with the women and forest people (Batwa/pygmies) in this troubled region, strengthening their communities through the complex process of capacity building for all artisans, communication/business skills for the leaders, product development based on traditional crafts, and providing a consistent marketplace and source of income. The objective of this project is to provide VA with the best practices and business models to develop sustainable social enterprises among the Batwa people and provide a practical example of such development by working on the Biwindi women’s weaver project.
Eliminate Poverty Now (EPN) and Makapads, Uganda
Pads for Peace Women’s Sanitary Hygiene Project
Eliminate Poverty Now (EPN) was founded in 2008 as a social profit enterprise assisting African organizations and peoples to develop self-sustaining livelihoods and thus eliminate poverty. The founders manage the company as volunteers and all profits are reinvested in livelihood and sustainable business development for women and poor African people. EPN’s founders have worked closely with the Millennium Villages program of the United Nations and are seasoned professionals from the U.S. corporate private sector. Makapads is a Ugandan social enterprise based in Mbarara that uses local materials and manufacturing capabilities to provide low cost sanitary pads and other female hygiene products to poor Ugandan women. A major problem in countries like Uganda is that girls and young women drop out of school because of the non-availability of female hygiene products like sanitary pads so that they are deprived an education that would have enhanced their livelihood and led to greater prosperity and peace as they were sustainably employed. The main objective of this project is to investigate the worldwide best practices for low-cost sanitary pad development and marketing/delivery, especially for Base of Pyramid (BOP) women in developing countries. The end objective is to develop a marketing plan and market the products in Uganda and other African countries so as to provide young women with the requisite female hygiene products and keep them in school and other educational institutions.

Sustainable Social Enterprise Development Plan at the Bottom of the Pyramid
Opportunity International (OI) provides small business loans, savings, insurance and training to people living in poverty at the BOP in the developing world. Clients in over 25 countries use these financial services to start or expand a business, develop a steady income, provide for their families and create jobs for their neighbors. OI works with fundraising partners in Australia, Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom. Contributions from individuals, governments, corporations and foundations are leveraged through savings deposits and commercial borrowings to increase the size of its loan pool. These funds support OI’s sustainable operations in over 40 programs in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America. Through these efforts, Opportunity International has created a self-sustaining approach to help solve the world’s poverty. The major objective of this project is to see if it is viable and sustainable for OI to develop and launch social enterprises for its borrowers/partners so as to provide a major supplement and service to their microfinance and micro-insurance to them.
Kellerman Foundation/International Gorilla Protection Commission, Rwanda
Gorilla Protection Eco-Tourism and Sustainable Enterprise Development Project
The Kellerman Foundation and the IGPC have long been involved with the protection of the gorillas in the Gorilla Park that is located in Rwanda and borders on the countries of Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda. While the gorilla population has stabilized and has even increased over the last decade, this wonderful animal is still being poached. The major objective of the study is to examine the world-wide best practices in eco-tourism and micro-enterprise development so as to provide concrete recommendations for the development of eco-tourism and micro-enterprises around and within the park this providing livelihoods and removing the reasons for poaching.

Bottom of the Pyramid Sustainable Social Enterprise Development Global Best Practices and Business Development Project
AVTL-Brthya is a U.S. and India based non-profit that provides Bottom of the Pyramid (BoP) educational and rural healthcare services in southern India. AVTL/Brthya has established a social business development organization called Gramian that will provide the basis for integrated village development through the establishment of a series of BoP businesses that are sustainable by developing surpluses that can be reinvested in the business or in another business after returning the capital of the original stakeholders. The goal of the project is to understand the worldwide best practices in sustainable social business development at the BOP addressing systems, strategic, organizational, operational, logistics, technology, marketing and supply chain issues as well as the best practice sustainable social business models developed in Asia, Latin America and Africa as well as Europe and North America. The Saint Mary's TGEMBA project is to identify business and financial models for sustainable social enterprise development and identify 2-3 areas from among Gramian’s portfolio of skills, capabilities and projects that can provide the basis for the successful development of scalable social enterprises for the organization.
Sustainable Aquatic Agricultural Business Development Project
As a follow up to the seaweed aquaculture AquaSAP organic fertilizer market identification and development project completed in 2009 for AquAgri/Pepsi in 2009, the Saint Mary's Social Services Management project team in the TGEMBA program has been asked to investigate the poultry and cattle feed market for AquAgri’s AquaSAP product in the U.S. The goal is to identify the market potential, market entry points and marketing strategy for AquAgri to sell its AquaSAP product as a poultry and cattle feed additive that prevents disease and enhances the immune system of these target recipients. The ultimate goal is to further increase the employment potential and improve the livelihoods of the seaweed farmers that AquAgri supports in India. The study is currently under way.
Mobile Creche/Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS), India
Global Best Practices, Performance Assessment and National Strategy Development Project for the ICDS
Mobile Creches (MC) is an Indian NGO that was founded to support children who live on construction sites to have a safe, healthy and happy childhood. MC has developed innovative and integrated education, health and nutrition programs, which are provided on the construction site itself, and cater to the very special circumstances of poor migrant laborers’ children. Running day care centers on construction sites for the past 35 years, Mobile Creches has run over 450 centers in Delhi, Mumbai and Pune and has reached over 350,000 children. Mobile Creches of Delhi is interested in exploring how the Indian Government’s Integrated Child Development Services (Anganwadi) system can be improved by examining the best practice institutions in other countries serving the same purpose and understand how these best practices can be utilized to transform the current Anganwadi system to make it efficient and effective with the appropriate set of incentives and partnerships to make such a system work. In addition, Mobile Creches would like to understand how integrated BoP child-care, pre-school education and child healthcare and nutrition programs work in other countries and what the best practice business models are to make such integrated child-care practices self-funding and sustainable in practice. In particular, it would like to explore what the best practices are for public-private partnerships in the area of children’s health and nutrition when combined with child-care and education at the BoP. In this context, it would like to leverage and improve the current Anganwadi system to enhance the effectiveness of the BoP child-care services it provides in India.

Bottom of the Pyramid Micro-insurance Development and Implementation Project with a focus on Sustainable Business Development

The major objective of this project is to review and understand the best practice MFI corporate governance structures and models in developing countries on five major continents as well as any other innovative network corporate governance structures that may be helpful for its future development in India. It wishes to benchmark itself against the best MFI network organizations worldwide by understanding the major corporate governance business models, their underlying corporate governance structures, the financial models that would be viable and sustainable for a global network MFI-like opportunity and the best practice corporate governance practices it should adopt for maximum efficiency and effectiveness. The deliverable of the project is to provide OI with a clear recommendation on the governance structure it should adopt in India in order to succeed in this very competitive but fast growing and large market for loans to help the poor.

Global Best Practices, Feasibility and Business Plan Study for BOP Vocational Education (VE)/Career Technical Education (CTE) in India
EdM Corporation is an educational startup in India that is focusing on providing engineering, vocational and management education to the mass of young Indians as the country embarks on a phase of accelerated development where the need for trained engineers, managers and those with vocational degrees and certificates is exploding. A major goal of this study is to provide an assessment of the size of the business opportunity in the VE/CTE area, particularly the identification of the key training areas where EdM Corporation should concentrate if it were to enter this educational space. It is estimated that the current need for technically trained vocational manpower is to the tune of 150 million people and it is this need that EdM wants to assess and fulfil the need. Another major objective is to document and detail the global best-practice business models and financial models in the VE/CTE space world-wide so that the most appropriate model for the Indian ecosystem context can be identified for EdM to consider when launching their endeavor in this area. A third major area of study is to develop the most appropriate teaching content for VE/CTE training by creating a pedagogical and business model that is sustainable.

Livelihood and Enterprise Development Center (LEDC), Philippines
Bottom of the Pyramid (BOP) Microfinance Study Project
LEDC is a Manila metro area non-profit entity working towards its vision for the “creation of development-driven communities”, where everyone has access to resources and opportunities in order to develop their skills and talents to uplift their standard of living. LEDC has been providing micro-loans, credit support services and entrepreneurship and business training to selected business partners at the BOP with the goal of being a “lender with a heart”. The major problem faced by LEDC was a decline in new loans and re-loans and a decline in retention of its borrowers/partners with an increase in the volume of accounts receivable. The SMC project team identified the global best practices for microfinance with an emphasis on urban lending, and the best practices for micro & small enterprise (MSE) development at the BOP. They identified the Key Success Factors (KSFs) and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for microfinance business models and financial models at the BOP, developed and conducted a competitive market analysis for LEDC operations and provided a comprehensive analysis of the financial profitability, risk and borrower retention profile that identified the root causes of LEDC’s problems. They provided a strategic sustainability plan that provided LEDC with short-term, medium term and long-term improvement, sustainability and growth recommendations that would revive and grow this NGO to serve its BOP borrowers/partners.
Urban Program for Livelihood Finance and Training (UPLiFT), Philippines
Microfinance Growth Strategy Project
UPLiFT is an NGO specializing in microfinance and social services for the urban poor, helping them build the capacities to meet their basic needs and earn a sustainable livelihood. UPLiFT helps more than 8,000 urban poor Filipino families each year through financial and social assistance. The UPLIFT Network assists existing Filipino organizations develop microfinance projects with a goal of empowering the poor. The major objective of this project was to provide UPLiFT wih a growth strategy that would allow it to grow from its current size of around 13,000 total lenders to 55,000 lenders in 3-5 years. The SMC T-GEMBA project team provided an analysis of the microfinance industry ecosystem, business models, operations and financial planning at UPLIFT, and focused on strategic partnership identification to allow UPLiFT to achive its growth targets and plans. The team provided opportunities and recommendations in the form of strategic initiatives which aligned with UPLiFTs current resources and strategic position which would allow UPLiFT to grow in the short, medium and long term.
Institute of Small and Medium Enterprise Development (ISMED), Thailand
ISMED was established by the Royal Thai government to coordinate the development of small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Thailand. The goal of ISMED is to enhance the business capabilities and build the economic competitiveness of SMEs in Thailand, especially helping those at the base of the economic pyramid. Two TGEMBA teams completed the following projects for ISMED:
Rural and Peri-Urban Small Hotel Project (8-35 Rooms) Feasibility and Business Model Development Project
THE Saint Mary's TGEMBA team for this project provided ISMED with an industry analysis on the feasibility of rural and peri-rural small hotels (8-50 rooms) with an assessment of various business models that could work well within the Thai context. They developed a comprehensive overview of the current competitive environment for rural and peri-rural hotels in Thailand and provided a methodology and recommendations regarding global and regional best practices and models for encouraging sustainable growth and employment within this sector of the Thailand economy.
Local Wisdom Entrepreneurship Development Project
In this project, the Saint Mary's TGEMBA project team provided best practices and recommendations to support ISMED’s entrepreneurship development for Small and Medium Enterprises at the Bottom of the Pyramid (BoP) in Thailand. The team identified the most suitable, financially sustainable business model for supporting the entrepreneurship development model and identified what motivates people at the BoP to become innovative entrepreneurs. In this process, they created a “barefoot” (i.e. the most elementary for those with a 3rd to 8th grade education) business plan as well as a “basic” business curriculum for those with a high-school education. They also developed a detailed plan for entrepreneurship skill development including templates for “barefoot” and “basic” business curricula targeted to individuals with minimal education and literacy. A unique feature of this project was the detailed study of the BOP entrepreneurship development systems of eight leading countries in the world and the provision of recommendations of how Thailand could develop a cutting edge entrepreneurship development system.
Bottom of the Pyramid Herbal Supply Chain Project
The objective of this study was to facilitate the development of a herbal supply chain in Thailand that would enable poor farmers in the country to grow and supply Thai herbs and spices to customers in the countries of the Asian Free Trade Area (AFTA) region. The Saint Mary's TGEMBA project team examined the best practices, business models and financial models underlying successful herbal supply chains worldwide and provided a step-by-step process for the development of a Thai BoP herbal supply chain to serve AFTA customers. The team recommended the private, government and NGO partners for ISMED to partner with to successfully build such a supply chain.

Add Value to Life (AVTL) and Brthya, India
To die with dignity and free of pain – hospice and palliative care providers strive for these outcomes for their terminally ill patients and these are the goals AVTL- Brthya, a U.S. and India based non-profit, aspires to provide for those with terminal illness in India. The TGEMBA team provided AVTL – Brthya with a replicable and scalable model for hospice and palliative care service provision in India and developing nations with potential to bring end-of-life care to hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people in need. They developed a hospice best practices analysis, a sustainable business model for hospice services delivery, a hospice services design and implementation plan, funding recommendations, a marketing plan and identified how best to position themselves within an industry to provide hospice services to as many poor and middle class terminally ill individuals as possible. The project involved the integration of the hospice care services with the educational services provided to destitute young girls from rural India who are provided with nursing education from K-graduation and the primary health care centers that have been developed in villages around the city of Chennai.
India Seaweed Cultivation Employment Development Project
AquAgri , an aquaculture and agri-business spin-off from Pepsi India, sought to enter the U.S. organic agricultural fertilizer market with its AquaSAP fertilizer product from Indian-grown and harvested Kappaphycus Alvarezii seaweed. Seaweed cultivation at AquaAgri engaged approximately 1,000 seaweed farmers/cultivators, with predominately women in key production and support roles. AquaAgri targeted exports to the U.S. to exponentially increase the current labor force and increase the earnings of farmers. The TGEMBA team conducted an analysis of the dynamics and key issues involved in the ecosystems of the global seaweed industry, the global organic foods market and the U.S. organic fertilizer and livestock feed supplement markets. They provided AquAgri with a comprehensive analysis and understanding of the U.S. market for nutrient-rich agricultural enrichment products and provided recommendations on the best entry strategy, key partnerships and the provision of the highest overall profit margins to support economic and employment development of the fisheries ecosystem in southeastern India’s Tamil Nadu region.

Rural Bottom of the Pyramid Supply Chain Network Enterprises Investment Project
As India’s largest private bank, ICICI Bank, has established one of India’s largest microfinance networks through its non-profit arm, the ICICI Bank Foundation for Inclusive Growth. IFMR Trust, a wholly-affiliated partner of the ICICI Foundation for Inclusive Growth, and its private equity fund, the Network Enterprise Fund (NEF), wished to make sustainable, social profit-oriented investments in rural supply chains within India to link rural individuals and enterprises at the Base of the Pyramid (BoP) to markets to develop and sustain their livelihoods. The primary objective of this study was to provide the IFMR Trust/NEF with a comprehensive overview of Indian rural supply chains in agricultural products and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) areas and to provide them with a methodology and recommendations about which nodes to invest the $150 million of funds encumbered for this purpose in the supply chain. The Saint Mary's Social Services Management project team investigated a number of best-practice rural agriculture and FMCG business and financial models for developing sustainable supply chains and recommended a best practice model for IFMR Trust/NEF to implement. In addition, they provided a detailed methodology, investment node identification and key partners to partner with in order to build a sustainable and monetized rural BoP supply chain for implementation in the Indian agribusiness and consumer goods ecosystem.

Micro-lending Cash Management Efficiencies and Technology Enhancement Project
The ICICI and IMFR Trust Rural Cash Management Project was focused on the evaluation of the cash management process of the Microfinance Institutions (MFI) in rural India. The main goals of the project were to understand the world-wide best practices in MFI’s, to identify the cash management inefficiencies that result in higher cost to microfinance clients in rural India, and to provide recommendations on how to minimize these inefficiencies by recommending applicable best practices and banking policy changes to reduce the transaction or cash movement costs. A major objective of the project was to identify how to provide poor borrowers in villages not connected by roads or other accessible transportation networks with MFI services that would not require them to travel many miles to reach the MFI. The SMC project team examined a number of business, finance and technology-based MFI models and were able to provide a solution to ICICI Bank/IFMR Trust that used cell-phone technology to solve this “last-ten-mile” problem and improve the cash inefficiencies in the Indian microfinance system.

Bottom of the Pyramid Rural Organic Supply Chain Creation Project
The primary objective of the BioAgri/WEFAS rural organic supply chain project was to provide, BioAgri/WEFAS the best practices for the production and distribution, (rural to urban) of organic produce in India while maximizing employment at the base of the pyramid. The Saint Mary's College TGEMBA research team studied global best practices in organic agribusiness practice and developed a sustainable supply chain for organic products to change the pattern of predominantly inorganic-fertilizer based supply chain practices in southern India. They provided a sustainable organic chain business model that allowed Indian farmers to produce, transport and distribute organic produce in urban markets in Tamil Nadu state in southern India. This study broke completely new ground since no one had attempted such a radical reorganization of sustainable supply chains in India.
