Dear members of the faculty and staff,

I would like to announce, with deepest appreciation and gratitude, Dr. Frances Sweeney's intention to step away from her role as vice provost for undergraduate academics and return to full-time faculty responsibilities at the end of the 2010-11 academic year. Frances has consulted with both me and Provost Bethami Dobkin, and we both fully support her decision while recognizing the need to ensure that the duties associated with the position of vice provost for undergraduate academics and the momentum that Frances has achieved on key institutional initiatives are sustained.

Frances joined our faculty as an assistant professor in 1994. Her administrative roles have included serving as dean for the School of Liberal Arts (1999-2004), assistant to the academic vice president for undergraduate initiatives (2000-2003), and vice provost for undergraduate academics beginning in 2004. She has also ably served on the President's Cabinet since 2004. She was the founding chair of the Cummins Institute and has served actively on the institute since its inception. She has brought diverse pieces of the College together, fostering cross-collaboration with Student Life and Enrollment, advising, teaching and mentoring students, and supervising undergraduate student support services, including Academic Advising and Achievement, Academic Development, Career Services, the Office of International Programs, and CILSA. Frances supports faculty recruiting and chair development, and she works with the January Term Committee and Collegiate Seminar program. She has also been instrumental in the creation and growth of our honors program. More recently, Frances has taken on supervision of Commencement and has been responsible for the successful implementation and oversight of our undergraduate summer session.

Although Frances will be missed in her administrative role, her transition will allow her to focus on her passions as a professor of Spanish and linguistics. Frances is a highly regarded author in the field of second language acquisition, an accomplished teacher and a treasured adviser. We are fortunate that her energy and expertise will remain a part of our community well into the future.

Please join me in expressing gratitude to Frances for her achievements and working with us on productive transitions throughout this academic year.

Sincerely,

Brother Ronald Gallagher, FSC

President
