The Library is pleased to announce a special workshop with a special guest: Rod Dunican, the Director of Global Education for the Wikimedia Foundation (the non-profit that runs and operates Wikipedia). This rare opportunity to talk with a representative from Wikimedia allows you all to come and find out how to potentially use Wikimedia in your classroom, or for your own personal needs.
Wikimedia (http://www.wikimedia.org/) has a simple mission statement:
"Wikimedia is a global movement whose mission is to bring free educational content to the world.
Through various projects, chapters, and the support structure of the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, Wikimedia strives to bring about a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge."
Rod Dunican describes his team's "partnering with universities around the globe to incorporate Wikipedia assignments into course curricula. The Wikipedia Education Program is currently in 60 countries, where we work with professors and librarians to understand how to use Wikipedia as a teaching and learning tool for a variety of subjects." He would like to sit down with interested parties at SMC and discuss opportunities in teaching.
Please save the date for this unique and special event:
Wednesday, January 22nd, beginning at 1 pm in the Wildenradt Theatre, 2nd floor of the Library.
RSVPs should be sent to Sue Birkenseer, firstname.lastname@example.org
