The best advice Nanette Mickiewicz ever received was a John Lennon phrase: “Life is what happens to you when you are busy making other plans.” As examples, she cites having twins while working as a resident physician and changing careers from healthcare provider to administrator. Mickiewicz manages a household of six while working full time as a physician and the president and CEO of the Dominican Santa Cruz Hospital. She graduated with a B.S. in biology in 1983 from Saint Mary’s and received her M.D. in 1987.

During her time at Saint Mary’s, she says she “refined her studying skills, opened up to non-science classes like Seminar and solidified [her] faith.” Having a job on campus also helped her learn time management skills. She encourages young women today to be lifelong learners, be open to new career opportunities that come along and “never lose your sense of humor.”
