22nd Annual Watershed Environmental Poetry Festival! "Stand Up for the Earth"

WATERSHED ENVIRONMENTAL POETRY FESTIVAL is a collaboration of Robert Hass, Poetry Flash, Ecology Center/Berkeley Farmers’ Market, and Ecocity Builders. The Watershed Festival emerged from Robert Hass's national Watershed initiative during his tenure as U.S. Poet Laureate, 1995-97, which explored connections between environmental awareness and the American literary imagination. The first two Watersheds were held at the Bandshell at Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.

Saint Mary's own ROBERT HASS ('63), United States Poet Laureate from 1995 to 1997 and Founder of River of Words at Saint Mary's Center for Environmental Literacy, will be reading along with thirty poets and writers, including MAXINE HONG KINGSTON; ALISON LUTERMAN; KIM SHUCK (Poet Laureate of San Francisco); TESS TAYLOR; RAFAEL JESÚS GONZÁLEZ (Poet Laureate of Berkeley) who will be presenting a ceremonial invocation with GERARDO OMAR MARÍN on conch and flute; CALIFORNIA POETS IN THE SCHOOLS K-12 students read led by poet-teachers JOHN OLIVER SIMON and MAUREEN HURLEY; Strawberry Creek Poets to read with Nevada City poet/eco-educator CHRIS OLANDER; poets RAPHAEL BLOCK, TIFFANY HIGGINS, JAHAN KHALIGHI, MAW SHEIN WIN (El Cerrito Poet Laureate). With emcees KIRK LUMPKIN and RICHARD SILBERG and music by THE BARRY FINNERTY TRIO; WE ARE NATURE OPEN MIC (to read, enter lottery on site at noon); RIVER VILLAGE exhibits, tents, tables by literary organizations, presses, magazines, and environmental organizations. Presented by Poetry Flash, co-sponsored by the Ecology Center/Berkeley Farmers' Market, Pegasus Books Downtown, Moe's Books.

The event will take place one block west from Berkeley BART; wheelchair accessible.
