A Crescendo at the End of the Semester

May 5, 2008

Dear Members of the Saint Mary's College Community,

The work of students, faculty and staff members is building to a crescendo this week. As we feel the joy and stress of finalizing many projects, please take the time to listen respectfully to others and be aware of the holy presence of God.

I urge all members of our community to participate in the Provost's Pathways to Inclusion Forum this Thursday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the Soda Center. This meeting will give participants the opportunity to contribute to building a more inclusive Saint Mary's community. For more information about the meeting please read today's letter from Provost Dobkin.

I am also pleased to accept the request of the Celebrating Diversity Committee to strengthen and enhance that group into the College Committee on Inclusive Excellence (CCIE). Their recommendation fulfills their charge as stated in the Building on Strengths Strategic Plan (Task 2.3), and various conversations on campus regarding diversity, climate and inclusivity. I will also be consulting with Senate leadership on how to best realize the aims of this proposal.

Finally, I would like to thank all of the individuals, especially VP for Mission Carole Swain and Dean for Mission and Ministry Brother Michael Sanderl, for their contributions to making De La Salle Week such a rich and wonderful celebration of the mission of our Founder. I was particularly struck by Brother Jose Cervantes comments during our convocation:

"Today, facing intellectual fundamentalism, facing the reductionism of visions and single cultures, the university must once again be the 'universitas' where all cultures are openly examined, discussed and lived."

In St. LaSalle,

Brother Ronald Gallagher, FSC
