Addressing Budget Challenges

Dear Members of the College Community,

Recognizing that the entire community remains concerned about the effects of the current economy on Saint Mary's College, I am inviting you to attend a Community Meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 1 p.m., in the Soda Center. The Budget Committee, which participated in shaping the budget assumptions for the coming year and beyond, will be present to assist in guiding the discussion and answering questions. I sincerely hope that this meeting will keep our community updated on how we plan to meet our priorities of enhancing academic excellence, maintaining affordability and enrollment, increasing institutional efficiency, providing a high-quality student experience, and keeping momentum in strategic planning and projects. Financial Vice President Pete Michell will guide us through the College's budgetary assumptions in this meeting. We have also provided an FAQ document addressing the many questions which we have received. I look forward to your participation in this event, as we face these troubling economic times together.

I have accepted the suggestion from the Staff Activities Committee to cancel the traditional staff luncheon scheduled for April 9 due to our current financial situation. However, I am happy to authorize the closing of offices at midday on Thursday, April 9, as a token of my appreciation for the hard work of the staff.

I would like to thank the many administrative staff members who answered a great number of calls and e-mails concerning the January Term speaker Bill Ayers. These staff members patiently and graciously dealt with a wide variety of responses to the event.

The season of Lent begins next week; Mission and Ministry will provide a service during Community Time on Ash Wednesday, February 25.

My best wishes to all for a productive and successful semester.

In St. La Salle,

Brother Ronald Gallagher, FSC
